Schitt's Creek: Crows Premiere (6x05)

You know what's weird? I can't figure out if this episode is called "Crows Premiere" or "The Premiere"! It seems to be listed differently on different sites. Oh well, I'll leave it as is for now. Let's dive in!

Cons:

So... Stevie is back with the motel business? I can't tell if this is 'endgame' status for Stevie, or if there's more to come. I really liked the idea of her exploring what else is out there. She gets a job at a sketchy airline, and then... that's it? She's back to what she was doing before? I think I just need more data before I can understand their reasoning here.

Pros:

Despite what I said above, I do like Stevie and Johnny's relationship, and it was cute that Johnny was being so supportive of her dreams... and that he was also genuinely happy to have her back in the fold. They are very sweet.

The main story of this episode is the premiere of the Crows movie. At first, Moira doesn't like Alexis' idea of throwing a big premiere party, but then she changes her mind upon seeing a good review come in, and wants it to be a big event. Alexis scrambles to make it happen, and while at first it seems successful, the release of live crows turns dangerous as the crows swoop down on the assembled crowd.

I love any episode that deals with Moira's complex relationship to fame. It was hilarious when Alexis called Moira a "twelve time Daytime Emmy Award attending actress." Of course Moira would be taken in by the slightest hint of praise, and of course she'd demand the impossible.

I also love that Alexis actually manages to pull off something pretty cool last minute. She gets press to attend, a red carpet, etc. etc., all with help from Ronnie and Roland. Just because things turned sour at the very end, doesn't mean all of her work was bad! She had the right idea, trying to drum up some interest. And in a strange way, it works - the crow attack at the premiere event ends up trending!

Obviously my favorite story this week was Patrick and David's. Patrick gets his wisdom teeth taken out, and then while spectacularly high on pain medication, rambles to David about how he wants to have a kid with him. I will admit to a moment of trepidation when I first heard this. It's a tired and insulting sitcom trope to have a couple who are already engaged to be married, suddenly have a big fight about wanting kids. However, my fears were put to rest. When David tells Patrick what he was talking about while high, Patrick assures David that he knows David doesn't want kids, and he's not disappointed.

Once again, Schitt's Creek has found a way to subvert my expectations and come through with something very lovely. Of course these two have discussed their future, and while they may have had different expectations about having kids, Patrick is happy with the way his life has turned out. I really wish there was more media out there that didn't treat having kids as the default, and any deviation from that a big discussion. As far as I'm concerned, children should be a conscious, serious choice, instead of the assumed thing that everyone is going to do!

On top of that, Patrick was super adorable when high, complimenting David's skin and being really goofy and affectionate with him. I liked that David took one of the painkillers before going to the premiere, so he and Patrick could both stare in bemusement at the crazy shenanigans going on around them. They're a great couple.

And that's that! I'm still thoroughly enjoying this season. I hope Alexis has more to do next week, though!

8/10
