Guess who's being annoying?
Cons:
You know what sucks, is that I've been forced into a position to be on Owen's side here? I might have been okay with this story-line a little bit more if Teddy had been upset but had known she was being unfair, but instead she was straight-up treating Owen like a villain for doing the same thing she did! Like, sorry, but she was making out with someone, horizontal on a bed, and just because clothes never came off that means that Owen is the bad guy here because his extramarital thing went further than hers? The issue with this whole story is that Teddy has cheated on Owen before, there was a whole story about it. Owen had to find out about it due to a butt dial. The ghost of that story was haunting this episode and it's weird that it's not being brought up! God, this would be so much more interesting if even though they were both weirded out about it, they ended up feeling positive about the experience. More angst for these two is about the least interesting possible outcome.
I liked the main story this week with Bailey and Simone and the racist visiting doctor, but I could have used just maybe one more additional button on things... it feels like Simone should have shared her experience in more detail after everything that went down.
Pros:
The story of the guy who fell in love and then died on the table was really sad. I was annoyed by the Teddy/Owen aspect of it, but I feel like Jules really shone in that plot thread, the poor thing trying to do what she could for the patient, and it all coming to nothing. Her and Simone having commiseration time, and the two of them being there for each other for Simone's hard day, all of that was lovely. I love seeing the interns as actual friends.
And speaking of having a good time with the intern characters, Blue really made me smile. He's going through his breakup with Molly by being hyper-caffeinated and overcompensating with enthusiasm at work. I love how he annoyed the hell out of Link but apologized for it, and I loved that he and Winston go off to watch baseball at the end of the episode. Winston telling him to keep quiet at the game made me laugh. Poor guy (to both of them). It's like that Crazy Ex-Girlfriend song, "Trapped in a Car with Someone You Don't Wanna be Trapped in a Car With."
I'm still kind of waiting to see where the plot goes with Ben's whole situation, but I'm actually 100% on his side as far as his behavior in this episode goes. No matter what he says, Teddy is annoyed by it, and it's honestly really weird and unprofessional. He did the wrong thing during the heat wave, but he's not incompetent. Teddy needs to figure out her shit, I'm with Ben on this one!
So yeah, that main story-line. I appreciate Grey's not pulling punches about racism within the medical field, and I also appreciate the complexity of this story, where you have Bailey as a total fan of this man, and Simone as a former victim of his prejudice, having been treated to his racist behavior at her last hospital. I loved that Bailey was able to stand up to him and get him out of the OR, and I was so worried that the poor patient would have to suffer, but no! Bailey pulled off a miracle and saved her, and we got to see the amazing reunion between mother and daughter. I also liked that Bailey was a good mentor and friend to Simone in that moment, just with the brief check-in, saying that it must have been hard to work for that man. She doesn't press for the details, and Simone responds by saying she ended up where she needs to be! Hearing the rude visiting doctor man talk bad about Bailey was really the icing on the "this dude totally sucks" cake.
So yeah, I think that's all for now. Teddy and Owen are annoying, Jo wasn't around this week to be annoying with Link, I'm bracing myself to be annoyed about Adams as he continues to grumble about his work situation... but on the bright side, I'm liking Jules and Blue and Simone more and more as characters as the show goes on, I want to keep hanging out with them!
