Grey's Anatomy: Bust Your Windows (21x15)

Winston... Jules... stay the fuck away from each other please and thank you.

Cons:

Not a romance I feel like I can root for. Feels random, feels unmotivated, feels kinda gross. I'm still on the Jules/Mika grieving train and then if I can't have that, Jules/Blue is sitting right there. Why Winston? Yeesh. No thank you. Why is it this show simply cannot serve me compelling romance arcs anymore? At least there was no Jo/Link or Teddy/Owen this week, so I wasn't forced to put up with any of their nonsense.

On the one hand, I'm relieved that Lucas is going to get to stay with the rest of his intern class, but on the other, that felt like much ado about nothing! The lesson that Catherine needed to see him learn, of being able to put a patient first, was kind of simplistic and predictable, was it not? And then right when we've gotten through that dumb drama, we pivot immediately into Simone having angst or doubt about their future, as she clams up when Lucas starts excitedly talking about where they'll go after residency. This romance is boring to me, so I want it to either, a) stay drama-free so it doesn't take up too much of my time, or b) end swiftly. I'm thinking we're not going to get either of those things. Sigh.

Obligatory note about how I don't like Catherine Fox, and less obligatory and more indignant note about how much Richard has sucked as a character this season. He bails on Lucas without explanation: "oh, I was going to talk to my wife but I got the sense that it wouldn't help so I just didn't..." fucking grow a spine, my dude. I do not understand how their marriage is supposed to function.

Pros:

This was actually an episode I quite enjoyed, despite what I just said above! Mainly on the strength of two subplots: one, the Jules and Blue roommate drama, which I actually really loved. It felt cute and domestic and grounded for the two of them to bicker about Blue leaving cups all over the house, and the rando distant connection of Blue's just turning up to stay was funny. For one glorious moment I thought it was a hookup and that we were finding out Blue was bi, but alas. We also see the resolution of this, as Blue is honest about having a hard time with Molly leaving, and Simone agrees to put some boundaries on the PDA with Lucas. I like this friendship! In fact, I like it better than I like Simone's boring-ass romance arc, but we're trying to stay positive, so let's move on.

The other subplot that really delighted me was Ben and Helm! I wish Helm was in the show more, whenever she turns up I am delighted as heck. The two of them dressing up as superheroes to try and help their young patient, cajoling him out of bed, was really precious! And I loved the conflict here, of Ben trying too hard to forge a connection and make a friend, and Helm really not having time for him. But then when Ben brings it up directly, it turns out Helm is stressed and things are really hard since Levi moved away. She was too caught up in her own challenges to realize Ben was reaching out a hand, and now that they're on the same page, they're going to be study buddies! I love that! It's so interesting how Grey's has kind of been killing it with the interesting and complex platonic dynamics recently, and falling down so hard on the love stories.

Window cleaner man crashing through a window is one of the more random catastrophes Grey's has come up with in recent seasons, but I loved the hospital lore, of like, this guy is a local celebrity and the kids in the pediatrics ward love when he shows up to clean the windows... he wears a cape and everything! That's so sweet. Also I love 30-year-old dudes who know what they want and pursue older women because why not? Poor Winston thinking that woman was the patient's mom when it turns out she's the wife... oops!

I'll stop there for now. Keeping a close eye on Winston and Jules, shaking my head so they know I disapprove...

7.5/10
