Doctor Who: The Reality War (15x08)

I'm trying to remember the last time I was this bummed out after watching an episode of TV. I mean, I watch bad TV sometimes, but this wasn't just a case of "that was not a good episode," this was... watching this just made me so, so sad. Let's... dive in.

Cons:

I'm going to start small and work my way up, here. The Avengers Assemble of it all was fun, but it really sidelined Belinda and it even sidelined the Doctor in a weird way, where I wish there had been a bit less spaghetti thrown at the wall here? I remember feeling this way about last season's finale too, that there was just too much going on, and too much of it was connected to old lore that I don't understand or care about. I stand by that the bi-generation thing with the two Ranis was pointless and it should have just been a straightforward "Mrs. Flood is a Time Lady" twist without that added element tossed in.

The thing about Poppy is that I wanted to like this concept, I honestly don't mind the idea of the Time Lords being an infertile species and the Doctor "wishing" himself this miracle chance to be a parent, but it was too confusing and the stakes were therefore difficult to grasp. I think the plot cul de sac of "yay, Poppy was okay inside the box!" and then she vanishes from the TARDIS and now the Doctor has to do a big sacrifice, all should have been squished and curtailed. Like, what if it was just shortened so that the box is opened, Belinda is in there, but Poppy isn't, and everyone else has forgotten Poppy, but Belinda remembers, and then because of weird shenanigans, so does Ruby, and then it's Ruby and Belinda together making a case for this world missing one person and how that's wrong? That would have given Belinda more to do (more on that later), and cut through some of the weird pacing in the end of this episode.

Doctor Who: Wish World (15x07)

I can't believe we're already so close to the end of this season...

Cons:

So, I did like this episode, but same complaint as last week about the Rani, and now the reveal of Omega or whatever. These are staged and presented as giant reveals, but I don't know them, ya know? I also think the bi-generation of the Rani is still pointless, it honestly would have been kind of fun and wild to have the little old lady be the one speechifying and dancing with the Doctor and reminiscing about how they may or may not once have been lovers. Why add another person into the mix? As far as I'm able to tell, it doesn't enhance the twist in any way.

This isn't a "con" so much as it is... a note, something to look out for: it was fun seeing Ruby in this episode for sure, but I wish that Belinda had had more to do. I'm hoping that somehow next week she'll have some big moments to shine, because I kind of wanted her and the Doctor to be united in their "doubts" stuff instead of her turning him in and then just apologizing for it immediately? It's a small thing, but I do want Belinda to have more agency here.

Doctor Who: The Interstellar Song Contest (15x06)

This episode kind of felt like it had too many moving parts, but overall I liked a lot of it!

Cons:

The big letdown for me is that like... I don't know who "the Rani" is. This is my own fault, I suppose. I could get into Classic Who so these multi-decade-spanning surprise returns actually impact me, but... I think a lot of the audience probably doesn't know who this character is. And the Mrs. Flood twist has been built up for so long, that getting an answer that means absolutely nothing to me did hit as a real letdown. I also thought having her bi-generate was a little odd, what's the narrative function of it not just continuing to be the same person playing the role for the rest of the season? Maybe I'll eat my words after seeing next week, but that just feels a little unmotivated at this point.

While overall I like the idea of the Doctor being triggered by the loss of Gallifrey into acting uncharacteristically, I do kind of wish that it hadn't felt so abrupt. It was a little too perfectly convenient, Belinda tuning in just in time to see him threatening Kid and then being like "that's not him." Maybe the Doctor tries at first to find compassion and understanding but just can't manage it, or maybe he comes out of the trance of that violence a little less easily when Belinda returns... something needed to be slightly finessed here, the pacing or arc of it just felt off to me in a way I can't quite define.

Doctor Who: The Story & the Engine (15x05)

I really, really liked a lot about this one!

Cons:

My one bigger structural complaint is just that I feel like they went too complicated when they could have stripped it down simpler, because the stakes and the concept behind the "bad guy" and the conflict were kind of muddy for me? Why have it be this thing where there's the barber who writes down the story for all these story-telling-slash-trickster gods, and then also Anansi's daughter is there, and they're sort of working together but really both of them need to be saved? Why not just have it be Anansi's daughter working alone, or why not have it just be Anansi, changed and warped somehow and in need of a perspective shift? You've got the stories feeding the battery and then the big spider mech in space and the hurt feelings and the goal of erasing the gods... it just felt like a lot of murkiness on the way through to the ending. I liked the Doctor and Belinda both helping to encourage these two wrong-doers to live for a better future and let go of bitterness, but it felt like the setup to get there could have been cleaner.

Less convoluted setup might also have given us more time with the side characters, all the trapped people in the barber shop. I would have loved to have more energy of just them and their playing off of each other and the Doctor. There's a scene where the Doctor is furious at the barber for betraying him, basically, getting him to come here to rescue them all, but I think that scene would have worked better if there had been a bit more focus on the friendship and connection between the men before that moment of realization. Plus, I was a little unclear as to the reason for the Doctor's level of vitriol - his friend was in mortal danger and then Doctor showed up, and then he's pissed at being dragged into danger himself? I wish there had been something more concrete where we knew the Doctor had been lied to directly and deceived into showing up, but the writing didn't make that super clear to me.

Doctor Who: Lucky Day (15x04)

Hmm. I was honestly less of a fan of this episode than I was hoping I would be. There were a few elements of it that just really bothered me.

Cons:

The big one is... Kate? Like? Girl, what the fuck? I'm really okay with U.N.I.T. being controversial and with Kate making bad choices, that's totally valid and interesting. But her letting the Shreek out to attack Conrad was so wildly out of line that I was waiting for it then to be a much bigger than it was. This should have been a thing where people were horrified and demanding she step down, right? And instead she and Ruby have a sweet little moment and share a hug and there's a quip about Ruby "collecting mothers" and I was just staring at the screen like... what now? What? She just did something absolutely insanely awful, siccing that monster on a human being. I know he's a shitty human being, but still. What kind of responsible leader of a para-military monster-hunting organization would do that?

I also didn't really like the scene with Conrad and the Doctor. That little speech about how the Doctor is fighting a constant battle to protect people who just want to be safe... I don't know. It felt very Moffat-era Who to me, in the sense that in those seasons the Doctor was very much cast as a brave soldier hero type, which is... not who this character is. The Doctor protecting people when he encounters people who need protecting is of course part of who he is, but I don't know how I feel about the characterization that he's fighting a constant battle. Feels strange to me.

Doctor Who: The Well (15x03)

A pretty good horror episode of Doctor Who!

Cons:

Okay, to be honest I think I was slightly more distracted by the connection to "Midnight" than I was compelled by it. The moment of reveal was a literal goosebumps moment, so fucking good, but then after that I was busy thinking... but wait, why is this same cosmic entity doing a different gimmick this time, what is the connection, does it matter to the entity that the Doctor has been here before... it just wasn't adding up to me as a continuation of a story, and felt like it could easily have been its own thing.

It also bothered me slightly that nobody figured out that Aliss might have a different relationship to the monster of the week because she's Deaf... like, for one thing, it might have been explained a bit that not all Deaf people are entirely without any hearing, and might have some slight ability to hear, but Aliss could have explained that she has no hearing whatsoever, and that probably should have clued somebody into the fact that hearing something is probably what triggered the "mad" behavior of all the other people on the crew. It was a little silly that this didn't occur to anybody until towards the end of the episode.

Doctor Who: Lux (15x02)

I liked this one, though I had a couple of pacing objections?

Cons:

The scene where Doctor Who is a TV show and the fans are meeting the Doctor and Belinda in their living room was cute, but it felt very strange from a pacing perspective. There's really just the one scene, and they talk to them for a bit, and then there's this whole big sad goodbye where they don't really exist and will cease to be once the Doctor and Belinda leave. I really wanted to feel impacted by that scene, but instead it felt a little unearned because it was happening all within five minutes of meeting these characters. I wish there had been a way to introduce them a bit earlier in the episode, have them materially assist in the mission, with Belinda believing they're coming along to help, but then the moment of realization that they can't. Just an extra scene with these characters before their sad goodbye could have done a lot. Also, whenever creators do a meta thing about the fans of their own property, do they have to throw in a couple comments about how annoying they find their fans? This one was like "we love our fans so much, despite how annoying you are" and it's like... gee, thanks Russell. I feel so seen.

Doctor Who: The Robot Revolution (15x01)

We're back! And we've met Belinda!

Cons:

I kind of wish there had been a tiny bit more space in the episode before Belinda decided to turn herself over to the robots. She has this moment where she's like, "my name is Belinda Chandra, and it's time I owned it" where she's like... nobly giving herself over to save the world, and it felt like it didn't have enough time to breathe as a moment because they'd literally just gotten to a place of relative safety. Like, take two minutes to show some time passing, maybe, Belinda learning a bit more about these people, so her sacrifice feels more earned? It was a small pacing issue for me.

I also felt like, culturally, we didn't get to learn much about what this planet was like before the timey-wimey stuff happened to it and rewrote the history of this world. This show can have a real gift of creating an atmosphere and world that feels real and deep and lived in very quickly, whereas in this episode it felt pretty shallow and surface-level.

Doctor Who: Joy to the World (2024 Christmas Special)

I really really love Ncuti Gatwa in this role, y'all, he brings such an amazing energy to the Doctor... I wanna keep him for a long time...

Cons:

This is an extremely cheesy episode and honestly that's exactly what the doctor (hehe) ordered, but there was one moment that didn't work for me, and that was the ending with the Doctor literally saying "oh, I get it! You're joy!" Like, yeah, we get it, Doctor. We got it from Joy saying the same thing as she ascended to become a big light in the sky. It was this weird unnecessary repetition of the cheesy conclusion and I didn't need it quite so spelled out for me? Same with Joy's mom in the hospital literally saying Joy's name out loud as she saw the light. Again, trust the audience maybe a little bit more to get what you're doing without saying it all out loud!

Doctor Who: Empire of Death (14x08)

This season flew by so quickly, I can't believe we have to wait until the end of the year for more of Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor! Let's dive in.

Cons:

Unfortunately, my big complaint from last week's episode does still hold true for me here. Sutekh as our villain to finish off the season doesn't really do anything for me. I don't know him, I don't know the lore, and "death" is kind of a generic villain, is he not? I mean, sure, I love that the Doctor takes on the mantle of Life, and defeats Death by turning Death on himself, that's a cool enough concept. But really this is some Marvel-esque drama, isn't it? Everyone in the world gets turned to dust, then the Doctor fixes it and everyone comes back. It's just sort of a generic bad guy to cap off the season.

And look - I liked the stuff with Ruby and finding her mom, I really did, but I do feel like several questions remained unanswered that had to do with Ruby specifically. Namely, what did old Ruby say to people to get them to run away in "73 Yards"? I really thought we'd get the answer here, but we didn't, really. Also, Ruby made it snow with the power of memories or something, so like... was that a Sutekh thing, or is there something more going on with Ruby? I don't need this show to "make sense", honestly, but when they seed little hints of things and they don't pay off, it does sort of chafe.

Doctor Who: The Legend of Ruby Sunday (14x07)

This is an undeniably excellent season of this show, wow!

Cons:

So, the big thing is, I don't know who Sutekh is within the lore of this show. I went and did a google, and he's a figure who appeared in one episode and then a bunch of tie-in stuff. There was a lot about this "reveal" that was effective, and I'm not saying knowing the deep lore is a requirement to get the significance of the twist, but it's like... I don't know. Ideally, you spend all season with the mystery of this recurring woman, and you hear people talking about "The One Who Waits," and then the moment of truth hits and you go "oh shit! I can't believe it was [blank] the whole time!" Sutekh could have been "Bob the Scary Demon Man" and it would have made no difference to me or, I would wager, to the majority of the audience.

I also think I could have used a bit more buildup of "The One Who Waits" just as a concept. Could have used one or two additional drops of that phrase. There's something a little clunky about the reveal being a god of Death, because it's like... hmm. Isn't the saying "time waits for no man," like, Death is going to get you, you can't run from it? So the idea of a death god "waiting" and then deciding to "stop waiting" is a little off for me. My favorite depictions of Death in fiction are always Death as Inevitability. Not cruel, not actively violent, just... it's coming for us all. This dude by contrast seems to be more of a god of destruction, an active force that wants to kill the universe. I'm down for it, I'm just saying maybe the "waiting" aspect is a little muddy.

Doctor Who: Rogue (14x06)

Mr. Groff! Sir! Excuse you!

Cons:

Honestly, I don't know if I can think of anything I'd change! Just that I wish Groff was coming on the show to stay, no matter how unrealistic that is.

Also - this isn't really a "con" so much as it is a "concern" or even just a question: last week's episode ending on such a stark scene of the Doctor forced to confront racism, it felt strange to set the next episode in the 19th century and have the Doctor's race entirely unremarked upon. Not bad, honestly, I kind of prefer just hand-waving that kind of thing for the sake of the story here, but it had the phantom bad taste of a show like Bridgerton that decided to do racial diversity by painting on a historical reason that racism isn't a thing anymore in Regency England and then just trotting along with a story entrenched in the restrictive systems that allowed for racism to exist in the first place. I'm being too serious here, but I just wanted to mention it.

Doctor Who: Dot and Bubble (14x05)

Wow, holy shit. This season keeps getting better and better.

Cons:

I really only have one tiny complaint, and it's that I wish the walking thing had been done a little differently? I think, allegorically, the idea that they all need arrows and instruction to be able to walk around when they have their bubbles up all the time is a good idea. Like, often when I'm driving somewhere I should know how to get to on my own, I still pull up the map on my phone just as an extra sense of security, or because I never bothered to fully memorize which side street to turn down or what have you. So it makes sense on that level. But the part where Lindy is literally running into poles and desks and stuff read as a little too ridiculous. I wish it had been a little less literal? Like what if instead of running into stuff, it's that Lindy is overwhelmed by the variety of things she's looking at around her, constantly distracted and overwhelmed, and she needs to mutter instructions to herself in order to force herself to walk, and she still takes the sharp 90 degree turns everywhere because that's what she's used to. And then when faced with a monster right in front of her that's blocking her most natural path towards the exit, she freezes up and can't figure out how to make herself find an alternative route right away. That would work better than the scene where she's literally just running into a pole multiple times.

Doctor Who: 73 Yards (14x04)

I categorically refuse to call this "season one" of Doctor Who (2023) so just jot that down, Disney.

Anyway. I think I really liked this episode but also... huh? What is happening here?

Cons:

This is maybe the epitome of amazing setup, disappointing payoff. I was riveted the whole way through the run-time trying to figure out what was going to happen. I was scared of the creepy lady, I was intrigued by the Mad Jack story, I was waiting with baited breath for the big reveal. And then, the second the episode was over, I sat there thinking...

But wait. What? Does any of this make any sense at all? So, as far as I can tell, creepy old woman was Ruby as an old lady getting sent back and stuck in time somehow, sent to warn young Ruby to stop the Doctor from stepping on the fairy circle and breaking it, thus preventing her lifetime of loneliness as everyone she ever meets leaves her.

But... okay, what? What did the old Ruby say to everyone who came close to her to talk to her, that made them all run away in fear? And it wasn't just fear in the moment: Ruby's mother ran and then shunned her entirely and wouldn't ever speak to her again for the rest of her life. Why? What was said? We get no answer about this whatsoever. And was the Mad Jack thing just a coincidence? Did the circle that the Doctor broke actually have something to do with it? Why would that name be on the scrolls if it was something from the future? Did older Ruby... leave that message there? But that doesn't make any sense either, does it? How much agency did older Ruby have over what she was doing? Not much, it seems, since she just stood there and repeated the same series of gestures again and again. What was the circle, actually? Magically speaking? Did it send the Doctor somewhere specific? Just blip him out of existence?

Doctor Who: Boom (14x03)

I regret to inform you that this was a very good episode of Doctor Who. Fucking Moffat, knock it off with being an occasionally very good writer. I hate this dude.

Cons:

I thought the romance arc between Mundy and the random dude whose name I can't remember was probably the least memorable part of the episode? It just felt a little flat and proscribed, and it fell into some cliche writing tropes. Why is it always that an oblivious woman is being pined after by her long-suffering martyr of a best friend? It's giving Rory and Amy, it's giving... Joss Whedon. I don't know. I didn't hate this, but it didn't add a ton to the story, it almost felt like more of a distraction to the core relationships that we should have been focusing on.

This was the most I've enjoyed Ruby and the Doctor's relationship on the show yet, but there was this one moment that I had a problem with in the writing. The Doctor is calling out to a dying Ruby and basically says "I need to talk out loud in order to think, and you're the only person I can talk to." I think I get what the goal was here, but it read a little strange to me. Because the point of the Doctor is kind of that he can make friends with most people, isn't it? He finds the connection, and the adventurous spirit, and the bravery, in all sorts of people he comes across. We even see him forming connections with the other people he's meeting in this very episode. So I do wish the sentiment had been adjusted just slightly. Ruby shouldn't be valued and loved simply because she is uniquely able to provide the Doctor with companionship. You know?

May 12, 2024

Doctor Who: The Devil's Chord (14x02)

Maybe I'm just a hater? I don't know. I liked this one better than the last in some ways, but I still... hmmm.

Cons:

So, I want to narrow in on what I was noticing about the Doctor and Ruby. There are plenty of moments when they play off of each other just fine, but they become pretty difficult to watch, for me, whenever they enter a mode I'm going to call "dynamic duo putting together the clues". It's that classic beat in many episodes of this show where the weirdness is happening, and the Doctor and his companion are riffing off each other, putting the pieces together, throwing out theories. The way these two do it is just... god, it's like, this weird manic energy where they don't actually riff, one of them just says something and the other one just repeats it in a high-pitched tone with a bunch of exclamation points. It's like they trying to manufacture the proper energy of invigoration by force, instead of their energies naturally feeding off of each other. I can't explain it any better than that.

I also feel like their affection for each other isn't earned; there are a couple of Ruby/Doctor hugs in this episode, the two of them reaching for each other when scared or in danger, that felt so proscribed to me. And there's this moment where Ruby is insisting, worriedly, "but you always have the answer!" and the Doctor has to give her the dire news that he doesn't know the way out of this one, and it just... I don't know. For one thing, this is only Ruby's third adventure with the Doctor, and he didn't have the answers the other two times either. For another, I think it comes a little too early in the episode to be this moment of despair before the turn to triumph, so it just kind of lands flat.

Doctor Who: Space Babies (14x01)

Huh. Based on what I'm seeing online, I might be in a minority opinion on this episode, because I thought it was pretty middling at best?

Cons:

So, I'll start by saying I think a couple of my complaints are going to be "too soon to judge" sorts of things. This is only our second episode seeing Ruby and the Doctor interact, so I'm totally willing, and excited, to see how their dynamic is going to evolve as we go on. But in this episode specifically, I felt like both of them were sort of... over-acting in order to artificially charge up their chemistry on screen? There were a lot of really loud line deliveries and kind of awkward pacing within the lines, eyes getting big, just like... really oversized reactions in the midst of conversations that didn't need to be played so... theatrically, I guess? This is a little hard to explain because I'm not criticizing like, the overall direction that Ncuti Gatwa is taking the character, I think there's a lot of great stuff there, it was just... it felt like both actors were playing up this great connection and affection they had for each other in a way that felt unearned. It's strange, because I liked them together a lot in the Christmas Special, but here it felt like they were trying to speed run the degree to which they'd have such a connection.

December 26, 2023

Doctor Who: The Church on Ruby Road (2023 Christmas Special)

Ahhh welcome Ncuti Gatwa to the role!!

Cons:

I'm not sure if I want to call this a "con" or not, more just something I noticed. We saw Ruby's life with her mom and grandma as being pretty perfect in terms of emotional fulfillment. Yes, they're poor and just barely scraping by, but it's the cheerful kind of poverty where the warmth of their connection sees them through and the house is full of love. We then see the version where Ruby was never taken in by her mom or adopted, and was instead captured by the goblins, and in that version, her foster mother is unhappy and kind of unfeeling, only taking in an occasional foster kid when she needs the extra money. So I guess my issue is more something I wish they could have done to add a bit of nuance. What if we saw some real hardship, some emotional friction, between Ruby and her family, instead of just good nature and teasing and joy? And what if the Ruby-less life was a little less 100% depressing? Like, maybe the foster mother does take in fewer kids, but she still puts them up on the fridge and has a connection to them? What if the lesson is that Ruby finding that family made things better, but not necessarily this enormous shift from totally depressing to totally wonderful? I like the idea that Ruby finding this family was the right thing for her and for her mom, but there's something a little over the top about her presence being that dramatic of a shift.

Doctor Who: The Giggle (2023 Special 3)

Well... I'm having some feelings!

 Cons:

Last week's special was about as perfect an episode as I could have imagined, so some of my complaints about this one are just in how it compares with the last one. I thought the tension and threat to Donna and the Doctor was so expertly portrayed in the last episode, that in this one, when once again there's a beat where the bad guy separates them to subject them to separate psychological tortures, it felt like a less-good retread of what we saw last time.

In general, I think this episode might have been served better with an entirely original bad guy instead of a callback to old-school Doctor Who. Maybe that's not very in keeping with the spirit of things, I know this is a show with a long history and it's fun to do callbacks, but the episode had to sit there and explain why we should be afraid of the Toymaker, and that felt like it undercut the threat. I shouldn't need to have exposition explain to me that this bad guy is super bad, more bad than most of the badness we have to face. I should just be able to feel that. And I did, with the concept of the creepy doll with the arpeggio laugh. It's almost like the episode would have worked without a puppet master behind it at all?

December 04, 2023

Doctor Who: Wild Blue Yonder (2023 Special 2)

Well, that was about as perfect an episode of this TV show I've ever seen, if I'm being super honest!

Cons:

Hmm. Difficult to say. There were maybe a few things where I would have wished for more, like just an extra dash of something we already got. Like, the clues that the words were a countdown, and the robot was moving to initiate something? I guess the evidence was right there, but I think the counting down bit would have been more satisfying if there had been some way that it was possible for me to suss that out on my own before the Doctor realized it. Like what if there were numbers on a door somewhere and the Doctor does say one of the numbers out loud at some point because he figured out the translation, and it's the number six or something, and then later when we hear it, you might be able to grasp that you've heard that word before? Just a few more breadcrumbs to make the moment when the truth comes out feel really satisfying.
