Grey's Anatomy: Flowers Grow Out of My Grave (15x06)

Aww. Crappy CGI notwithstanding, it was fun to see some of the dead characters from the show's past make an appearance.

Cons:

So, we did get further progress on the Schmidt and Nico situation, but it felt familiar to me. In a bad way. Basically, they kiss, and then Nico finds out that Schmidt has never been with a man before, and he says that he can't teach Schmidt how to do this. Isn't this exactly how Callie and Arizona started? Can we not just have a normal romance between these two? That was a little disappointing, although the elevator kiss was pretty adorable.

Say it with me, kids: the love triangle sucks. This week was focused on Betty, who has gone missing, but we still had to spend an annoying amount of time focusing on Teddy deciding whether or not to tell Owen she's pregnant. And as the episode ends, Teddy decides not to tell, because he just seems so happy with baby Leo and his new family. Ugh. Please. Again? How long are we going to drag this out?

Pros:

I'm not sure I'm convinced by the chemistry that they're setting up between Meredith and DeLuca, but I kind of don't care, because the comedy is on point. Link and DeLuca and Meredith. Maybe there's threesome potential there. In any case, watching the two of them make eyes at her, and watching Meredith get really flustered while still undeniably entertained, is putting the biggest smile on my face.

The majority of Meredith's stuff in this episode is a bit of a downer, though. She finds out that Thatcher, her father, is dying. She debates on whether or not to get in touch with him, and ultimately decides not to. She ends up over at Jo and Alex's place, helping Link to cut his ruined hair. This episode explored grief through the lens of Día de Muertos, which was a nice change from all the Halloween themed episodes we usually see on TV this time of year. I liked seeing Meredith confront the ghosts of her past, not in a creepy or traumatic way, but just in a way of acknowledging and remembering them. She is helped in this quest by the relative of a Mexican patient, whose entire family shows up and makes an ofrenda at the hospital so that this little girl can be included in the tradition. It was nice to see echos of George, Lexi, Ellis, Derek, and Mark. I miss them all!

Then you've got Jo and Bailey, who save a patient's life by resurrecting a dead mans' liver. This procedure is risky, and Alex tells them to shut it down, but they go ahead with it anyway. In the end, Jo and Alex get into a fight over it, but also start making out, because Alex is turned on by Jo's medical genius. I like that even through the stress of Alex's position as interim chief, he and Jo are still in the honeymoon stage, and still all over each other. It's super cute. We're also seeing the continuation of Bailey's stress over Ben. I think that will come to a head in Station 19, so we'll see the aftermath of that in the coming weeks, I'm sure. I still like Jo and Bailey working together. They make a good team.

Even though the Teddy stuff bugs me sooo much, I actually didn't mind the drama of Betty being missing, and Amelia worrying about her. I'm hoping that things resolve well, but it would make sense for Betty to have a relapse. Recovery doesn't move in a straight line, and Amelia would know that better than most. Her outburst about her behavior as a child was pretty chilling. I also liked that Teddy put aside her annoying and earth-shattering news to help hunt for Betty. That was definitely the right thing to do.

Some other tidbits - Jackson has been apologizing to Maggie with gifts, and it seems their rift is on the mend. I like that Maggie took time to reflect and remember her mother, and that Jackson recognized that she needed time, and found ways to help her. I also liked the little thread of DeLuca's young patient having a crush on him. That was adorable. DeLuca didn't start off being a super sexy rock-star doctor, but it's kind of hilarious that he turned in to one. He's certainly become a more interesting character for it. We see Richard missing his sponsor, and remembering her in his own way by visiting her grave. The voice-over talks about how death means different things to different cultures and individual people, but we all have ways of remembering and honoring those we have lost.

I'll end with the ending. I thought that scene with Meredith, Link, Jo, and Alex was really fun. I have no idea if Meredith and Link could really work out, but the four of them would make great couple friends. Meredith makes a comment about Jo and Link's friendship earlier on in the episode, and Link shoots back and asks if Jo should be worried about Meredith and Alex's friendship. That was a great moment. I think Link might be able to keep up with Meredith, and they might have a lot of fun together.

There you have it! Another full episode, with lots of good stuff, and a few annoying things as well. I liked the focus on Mexican tradition, even if we have a dearth of latinx characters...

8/10
