The Vampire Diaries: I'd Leave My Happy Home for You (6x20)

Wow! Yay! That was intense. Let's take a look at one of the better episodes of this show that we've seen for a long time.

Jo and Alaric are just about ready to get married. Their friends surprise them with bachelor and bachelorette parties. At Alaric's party, Damon talks to Alaric about his plan to become human with Elena. Damon hasn't broken the news to Stefan yet, though. Elena isn't sure what to do. She talks to Jo and Bonnie about the possibility of being human again, wondering if she'd miss the perks of vampirism. She and Damon end up hanging out together, talking about it. Damon says that he's had enough fantasy in his life. He's willing to give up all the perks of being a vampire if it means he gets to spend his life with Elena. Elena takes the cure, and it works.

Meanwhile, Enzo tells Stefan that Lily has the potential to become a ripper again, because she's so distraught about losing the Ascendant. Stefan goes to track Lily down and keep her calm. He tries to make her remember the love she once felt for her family, but Lily associates her memories of her sons with her memories of the weak person she once was. Stefan can see that his words aren't working. He prepares to inject her with vervaine and lock her up, but Lily anticipates his attack and gets to him first, running off. Lily finds Bonnie and Jo. She is furious at Bonnie for destroying the Ascendant. She stabs her in the neck, hurting her, but luckily not fatally. She goes to feed on Jo, but stops when she realizes that Jo is pregnant. Lily tells Jo that it's twins.

Enzo tells Stefan about Damon's tentative plans to become human again, prompting Stefan to wonder why Damon didn't tell him. Stefan calls Damon to tell him that Lily is free and on a rampage. At that point, Lily turns up and snaps Damon's neck. Newly human Elena stabs Lily in the eye and manages to make her escape, but it's a close call. Stefan finds Damon, and asks him why he wouldn't tell him about his plans to become human. Stefan is hurt. The two of them go to find Lily. Stefan manages to distract her by talking about how they can be a family again one day. Damon sneaks up behind her and injects her with vervaine. Stefan visits Lily where she's locked up, and Lily insists that she will make him suffer.

Jo tells Alaric that she's having twins. This means that Jo's family (her father specifically) will be coming after her. If their babies merge, it will take away Kai's power to lead the Gemini Coven. They need to run far away to avoid that happening. Elena and Damon talk about Damon becoming human again. Elena, in becoming human, regained all of her memories of Damon that Alaric had taken away from her. She remembers how much Damon loves being a vampire, and how much he would never want to give that up. She tells him he has to wait and be sure that he really wants to be human, before he makes a mistake he'll always regret.

In a brief subplot, we see that Tyler has stopped going to police training. He explains to Matt that he's worried that some day, on the job, he'll be forced to shoot and kill somebody. He never wants to be a werewolf again. Matt and Tyler get into a fight, wherein Matt says he's just trying to help Tyler control his rage.

At the very end of the episode, we see Kai in the prison world with Lily's friends, all of whom have been awakened. He has a plan to release them all from the prison world! Oh no!

So! Complaints? Caroline wasn't in this episode. Apparently she ran off after she turned her humanity back on. I missed her.

Also, Enzo finally had a scene where he actually talked to Damon, but even still he seems totally useless. Why is he even in this show? They don't seem to have any idea what to do with him, even after this whole connection with Lily was revealed.

But actually, this episode gave me so much I never knew I wanted! First of all, Elena and Damon. Their romance has actually started to become interesting to me again, as we wind down on Dobrev's time on the show. Her returning memories of Damon made me so happy. And the way Elena respected that Damon loved being a vampire? Precious. Even knowing that the actress is leaving the show, it's still so strange to see Elena as a human again. What a monumental moment!

I know Tyler is leaving the show as well, but I still really liked the plot thread with him and Matt. Matt's hatred of vampires is really, really fantastic. As we jump forward into an Elena-less Mystic Falls next season, I hope Matt's character can take a more central place in the show. I'd love to see him fight back against Stefan, Damon, and the rest of the vamps.

Damon actually talked to both Enzo and Alaric in this episode. It's nice to see these people, who are supposedly friends, actually acting like friends. Particular kudos to the show for allowing us a moment of lighthearted revelry as we start things off with a bachelor party for Rick and a bachelorette party for Jo. How sweet!

I actually felt a bit of fear when watching this episode! I remember back in earlier seasons, they used to do some pseudo-scary stuff. The vampires were occasionally actually scary and threatening. It's been years since I've felt that from this show, but I gotta say, when Elena was running from Lily, my heart was pounding! I think it's because I was feeling Elena's fear - she just turned human again, and that's so wonderful for her... and then along comes trouble.

Stefan broke my heart in his speeches to his mom. He just wants his mother to love him! It's so depressing to see how unlikely that is to ever happen. Stefan also had a rather sad moment of leaving a message for Caroline, asking her to come back. The poor guy is just getting abandoned in every direction - and then he finds out about Damon!

And yes, of course, I'm ending with a discussion of the bromance. Holy hell YES. Alaric tells Damon he should tell his brother about his plans to become human, but Damon just doesn't know how to tell him. And then when Stefan hears it from Enzo, he's so hurt! He asks Damon if he has any idea how it felt for him to hear it that way. Damon says that of course he knows how it feels - that's why he couldn't bring himself to tell him. And then Stefan and Damon trap Lily. You can tell that while Damon has written off his mother as just another enemy, Stefan is still deeply affected by their past relationship. Damon even asks Stefan if he's okay. Aww! I've been seriously missing the bromance, so I appreciated these moments a lot.

There you have it! Yikes. What the heck is going to happen in these final episodes? What is Kai going to do? What is Damon going to do? Lily? Tyler? Eeeek!

8.5/10
