The Big Bang Theory: The Locomotion Interruption (8x01)

Anyone who's read my reviews of this show before knows that I have decidedly mixed feelings about it. Let's start with the plot of the opening episode, and then we'll get into my thoughts.

Forty-Five days after Sheldon left home, he is in a train station in Arizona, without pants, begging for help. He calls Leonard, who comes to pick him up. Amy tags along, angry that Sheldon called Leonard instead of her. On the car on the trip back, Sheldon reveals that he was nervous about Amy seeing him fail. Amy reassures him that it's okay to not be perfect. Sheldon feels like he's made great progress because, even though the trip ended badly, he handled going across the country in trains all on his own. However, as he enters the apartment at the end and sees Penny's new hair, he freaks about about the change.

Bernadette gets Penny a job interview. Penny is nervous, but she goes. However, it goes very poorly at first. She is about to leave, when suddenly she and the interviewer bond over how much Bernadette scares them. She's quite the bully!

The third plot is about Howard. He is uncomfortable by the fact that Stuart is still living with his mom. Stuart and Howard eventually get into a fight about it, and Stuart remains determined to stay living with Mrs. Wolowitz.

Problems?

Well, this is another case of a show making a big move and then pulling back immediately. Seeing Sheldon actually run away at the end of the last season was such an interesting, risky move to make. And so what do we get when we pick up in Season Eight? Oh look, he's instantly brought back home. This show has never been great about longevity. I wish they could have pushed the concept of Sheldon-away-from-home for at least a few episodes.

But other than that, this episode was okay. There just weren't very many good jokes in it, to be honest. It felt pretty lackluster.

I did love Penny and the interviewer, though. That was probably my favorite scene in the whole thing. And I don't care what Sheldon has to say - her hair is adorable!

As is usual with this show, I'm keepin' it short. There were two episodes released on the premiere night, so now I'm on to watch the next one!

7/10
