Modern Family: The Long Honeymoon (6x01)

Modern Family is back! I liked this episode quite a bit. A good strong opening for the sixth season. Although, I must say, this was sort of standard fare. Nothing special or big to celebrate the premiere. Still, I had fun watching it!

Cam and Mitch have been home from their honeymoon for some time, but Cam won't let the honeymoon die. Mitch gets increasingly annoyed, until finally he suggests that Cam dial it back a bit. Cam is offended. In the end, Mitch decides he can try to be a bit more romantic, and the two of them dance together to one of their special songs.

Gloria is annoyed by the way Jay has been dressing, because he doesn't seem to be putting in any effort to look nice for her. When Jay says he doesn't care how Gloria looks, she takes him seriously and threatens to go into a bar in sweats and with messy hair. In the end, they both agree that they have to try hard to be sexy for one another while it's still possible. Manny throws a surprise party for Gloria, who reveals that she can get ready very quickly, as she emerges looking put together and beautiful as always.

The Dunphy family has been having an amazing summer, but when Alex comes home from her charity work, the balance is destroyed and things start falling apart. At first, they want to get Alex to go back to her charity trip, but eventually they beg her to stay, realizing that this wasn't a happy summer, but a stupid summer - they were all living in ignorant bliss of all of the things that were going wrong.

Complaints?

Nope. I mean, I already said that this wasn't a particularly creative or "big" episode, which Modern Family can do very well if it so chooses. It's always fun when they try something ambitious and clever. However, sometimes it's okay to pull back and go for something a bit more simple.

Cam and Mitch's plot was pretty standard, but there were a few moments I adored. One was the term "hugsband," which made me chuckle quite a bit. And the other was Lily, dressed up in that ridiculous cupid outfit. When her dads are dancing, she says this: "Are we almost done with fairy time?" Cam and Mitch both think she's using the word "fairy" as a homophobic slur, and they freak out, but it turns out she was referring to her costume. That part made me laugh.

Gloria and Jay's plot was probably the least funny of the three, but it did get a chuckle out of me when Jay, exasperated, asks Gloria if she's always been able to get ready so quickly.

The Dunphy plot was by far the funniest this week. I was giggling through most of this whole thread. Especially when Alex came back, and every time she exited the house for some reason, things were nice again, but then she'd come back inside and things would fall apart. Also, the sequence of Haley's web cam, and all of the weird stuff that had been caught on camera... so great.

I think I'll leave it there! This was a nice solid episode of Modern Family.

8/10
