The Big Bang Theory: The Anything Can Happen Recurrence (7x21)

This was actually a pretty cute one.

Sheldon can't decide what he should change his specialty to. Penny suggests changing things up to get him out of his rut and help him decide. Leonard says they should reinstate "Anything Can Happen Thursdays." Penny, Leonard, and Sheldon go walking around to try and find a new restaurant, when they find Bernadette and Amy out for dinner. They had both made excuses as to why they couldn't hang out, so now they've been caught in a lie. They admit that they're tired of hearing Sheldon struggle with his decision, and tired of hearing Penny complain about her stupid gorilla movie. Even Leonard has to admit that Penny has been talking about it a lot.

Penny takes Sheldon and the two of them leave, both angry at their friends' lies. Leonard and Amy have a nice talk about Sheldon, and how hard it is to get close to him. Sometimes, Amy is jealous of the connection between Penny and Sheldon, even though it's obviously not romantic. Sheldon and Penny go to a psychic, which Sheldon obviously thinks is crazy. The psychic tells Sheldon that his life will get better if only he can full commit to the woman in his life.

Meanwhile, Raj is nervous to watch a graphic horror movie with Emily. He decides to watch it with Howard first so that it won't bother him the second time around. When he does watch it with Emily, she admits that these types of movies turn her on. At this point, Raj is happy to watch.

Complaints?

Howard and Raj watching the movie together seemed to provide all sorts of opportunities for good comedy, but in my opinion these opportunities were squandered. It just wasn't funny. There was nothing wrong or anything, but... it just didn't make me smile, not even once.

In terms of good stuff, though, I will admit that the thought of Emily being turned on by the gory movie is pretty funny. It ties into the sort of weird vibe we have going with her, where she seems to get off on violence. I hope there's a nice punchline to this joke.

The main plot, concerning Sheldon and Penny, I found very fun. Amy was right to notice the familiarity and comfort between those two, even though it's obviously platonic. It's always been one of my favorite character dynamics on the show, and whenever it's explored, it makes me happy. I mean, there are some fairly shallow jokes going on here: Penny says that the two of them can always complain to each other, even if nobody else wants to listen to it, but then the second Sheldon starts talking about his new job focus, she tells him to shut up. He gets her back later by saying that most of what she says to him seems totally pointless and he barely listens. They have this type of relationship where they can afford to be rude and downright disrespectful to each other, because they know that neither one of them is going anywhere.

I also just loved the idea that Bernadette and Amy were getting tired of everyone's crap, and wanted to get away for a while. It's refreshing. Bernadette is by far the most grounded in reality of all the characters, and it was nice to see her get fed up. Also, the detail about her apologizing to Howard with a Catholic school girls' outfit was pretty amusing. (Although why did they have to make Amy wear one? I mean, she looked good and everything, but it just made me uncomfortable on Sheldon's behalf).

I'll keep it short. It's only fair, after all... The Big Bang Theory averages about 19 minutes an episode when most sitcoms do around 23. Do you have any idea how many ads you're watching when you watch this show on TV? It's crazy.

7.5/10
