Grey's Anatomy: Everybody's Crying Mercy (10x03)

I'm going to be brief about this one. I really am. It's way too easy to ramble on about Grey's Anatomy

Basically, Richard is being a bad patient. He refuses to get a feeding tube and he can't eat because he can barely swallow. Shane is upset, Bailey is defending Richard's right to make the decision. Eventually, Meredith comes in (she's supposed to be on leave because of the baby and the surgery). She's worried about Richard. Shane finally convinces Richard to take the feeding tube. In a heartbreaking conversation, we learn that Richard didn't choose Meredith to be his family. He chose her because he thought she would make a logical and unemotional choice, and that she chose wrong when she let them do the surgery on him.

Meanwhile, Callie and Arizona are still having major problems. Callie is snippy at everyone, but a situation with a patient who cheated on her husband made her realize that things can get complicated. Arizona really wants to go to couples counselling, but Callie doesn't go. You're meant to feel really bad for both of them in that moment, and I think it works really well.

April passed her boards! Not much to say about this, other than... yay! And her and Jackson of course had an almost-moment about it. I don't know what to think about these two anymore.

The interns are studying all the time and sticking close together after Heather's death. However, Jo is getting tired of waiting to have sex with Alex. (He's been waiting because he wants it to be special, much to Christina's amusement). In the end, Jo kicks her friends out of the house and her and Alex finally seal the deal. Woo!

Christina and Owen are having a hard time staying away from each other, and Christina is struggling with it. Eventually she tells Owen that they should try dating other people, even though it will suck, so that they can start to move on.

Meredith and Derek are having a really hard time with the new baby. They are exhausted and falling asleep at inopportune moments. Having Callie around (because of her fight with Arizona) is actually helping them keep things on track.

Jackson and Owen clash over funding. Owen is concerned about the cost of repairs after the storm, but Jackson keeps focusing on the medicine. Owen knows what the hospital needs, and he knows that the board has to meet to talk about these things. After threatening to take Jackson's pro bono facial reconstruction away, Owen finally gets Jackson to see how bad things have gotten. The two of them page the other board members 911 and trick them all into having a board meeting. Jackson and Owen announce their intent to throw a big gala to raise money for the hospital.

Phew! I kept it pretty brief. Now, what do I think of this episode? Good stuff. I particularly loved the stuff with Owen and Jackson. As Stephanie points out, their current chain of command is pretty "jacked up." Jackson is a member of the board, and the board is Owen's boss. However, Owen is still the Chief, and Jackson is his medical subordinate. It makes sense that this would cause problems, and it was nice to see them explored. I'm also curious to see the continuing development of Richard and Meredith's tragic relationship. Richard seemed like he was ready to die, and resents still being alive. Although not explicitly mentioned, it made a really tragic contrast to Brooks, who was so young and full of life. She died, while the much older person got to live.

Things I didn't care for particularly include Derek and Meredith struggling with the new baby. There were some comedic moments in here, but we've already watched them struggle with Zola so it's sort of old news. Also, I'm not quite sure I like what's going on with Owen and Christina. The will-they-won't-they thing can only play for so long.

In all, this was a very solid episode!

8/10
