The Mentalist: The Whites of His Eyes (7x08)

Okay! Things are getting interesting here! I can't believe we only have five episodes left... I'm gonna cry like a baby when this show ends. Let's just jump right in.

A high-profile witness is murdered just days before he was set to testify against a murderer. There is one other witness who could testify, but she's a recent mother, and she and her husband are really nervous that she's going to be killed as well. Spackman, an old colleague/enemy of Jane and Lisbon, asks Abbott and his FBI team to help protect the other witness.

Along the way, they investigate the family of the suspect - a man who beat someone to death over a small altercation in a bar. The family has gang connections, and it looks like they're the ones who hired the hit man to kill the first witness, and now they're targeting the other witness.

They come up with a plan to preemptively get the assassin by switching out the witness with someone else as they escort her out of the hotel. It turns into a creepy in-the-dark race to find the assassin before he kills the witness and the rest of the team. Jane, who has been extremely worried about somebody getting hurt, purposefully tells Libson that the assassin might be in one part of the building, to get her out of the way.

Afterwards, Lisbon is furious with Jane, and she tells him that he has to let her do her job. Jane knows what he did was wrong, but he says he would probably still do it again. Lisbon doesn't see how they can work together if that's the case, but Jane says they'll work through it.

There's not much of a subplot in this episode, but we do see Wylie and Vega continue their flirtation, and even enter into some friendly video game competition.

So... I think this episode takes the cake for the season so far. I loved it. I have only one complaint, to be honest. Spackman purposefully asked for this FBI team to help him out, and then kept getting all angry at Jane for being his unconventional self. What was Spackman expecting? Why ask to use Jane if he was just going to complain about it?

Other than that, I loved everything this episode had to offer. Let's just go through some of my favorite stuff.

Lisbon and Jane playing foosball on a date! They were so happy and natural together! It was nice to see them spending some genuine time together outside of work. I love how comfortable they seem to be with each other. The scene in the trailer was also cute, what with Jane worrying and being all solemn, and Lisbon trying to make him feel better. If you look at the later scene, the implication is that Jane was already considering lying to Lisbon to keep her safe. No wonder he was so torn and worried!

Vega and Wylie are the cutest. I'm so rooting for them as a couple, and I think it's too bad that we won't have more time to see their relationship develop. To be honest, and I feel a bit blasphemous for saying this, I like them better than I liked Rigsby and Van Pelt. They're just... cuter!

I gotta say - the best character in this episode was the mother of the murderer. She was so funny. Jane was impressed by her great lying skills, which I thought was great. My favorite exchange was when she said "You can sneer at me all you like," and Jane immediately responds with "I will, thank you." Later, when she finds out how the FBI foiled the assassin's plans, she actually does a slow, sarcastic clap to indicate a job well done.

The case itself was another interesting one. This whole season has been really cool because we're not seeing them find murderers, but rather help to actually put known criminals away. Each situation is a little different, as sometimes they're protecting a witness, sometimes looking for proof to put away someone they know is a bad guy... it works nicely and it forces the show to think outside the normal formula for shows like this.

For all the cuteness of Lisbon and Jane in this episode, there was also the downer ending. I fully expect to have a happy ending for this show, but for the time being it looks like things are going to be rough for our favorite love birds. I'm not really sure how they get past this one, either. Jane has a lot of stuff about his past that makes him scared of losing people. It's impossible not to sympathize with that, since the whole show has been about his personal journey. But Lisbon is absolutely right - this is her job. Her job is dangerous, but she loves it and she wants to do the best she can with it. How can she have her boyfriend stepping in the way of her professional goals? It's a tough situation, and I love the complexity of it.

Only five episodes left! I have mixed feelings about this... I'm sad that it's ending, but I think it's the right time.

9/10
