Modern Family: Las Vegas (5x18)

This was the funniest episode of Modern Family that I've seen in a very long time. No kids, just the grownups, and there were so many layers to each joke that I could hardly keep up. I was cracking up the whole time. I'm going to try to go through the plot, but there's no way I can hit all of the hilarious moments in this episode. Go watch it, if you haven't. Seriously.

Jay sold some cabinets to the owner of a Las Vegas hotel, and he procures fancy VIP rooms for himself and Gloria, Mitch and Cam, and Claire and Phil. While there, tons of shenanigans go down.

First of all, Jay becomes obsessed with the fact that they aren't in the most VIP level of the hotel. He tries to get a meeting with the owner of the hotel and asks him to bump them up to the next level. When he succeeds there, he learns that there's another level about that. Gloria sees an ugly dog statue named "Rebarka" that is a matching set to the statue they already own, Barkley. Gloria doesn't want Jay to buy it, so she decides to put it on hold to avoid Jay getting his hands on it. It gets delivered to their room by mistake.

Meanwhile, Mitch and Cam run in to Mitch's ex-boyfriend, Langham. Langham is there with his partner, and the two of them are throwing a bachelor party in Vegas. While Mitch thinks this is silly, Cam actually thinks all of the planned events sound fun, and he ditches Mitch to go play. Mitch accidentally causes Langham to think that he's inviting him back to his room, and when Mitch plans a romantic bath for him and Cam, things get even more mixed up when Langham thinks the bath is for him.

While all of this is going on, Phil is trying to get into a special magic society, while Claire wants to win back money she lost previously while gambling. Of course the two of them get involved in the shenanigans as Phil tries to plan a romantic bath for Claire as well, to make up for spending so much time on his magic.

Where do I even start with the jokes in this episode? Throughout, we've got the three connected rooms for the three couples, and then there's Langham trying to sleep with Mitch, Gloria trying to hide "Rebarka" from Jay, Phil doing magic tricks, Jay trying to get their room upgraded... and throughout it all, the butler, Higgins, is getting a wildly inaccurate opinion about Phil and the rest of the family.

I don't honestly think I have anything to complain about. Everything I want out of Modern Family was given to me in this episode. Yeah, I like the kids, but in this particular installment I didn't miss them at all. It was a fun adventure the whole way through. Let me list a few of my favorite jokes.

The number one funniest thing was that Jay wanted to give the owner of the hotel a Cuban cigar and some scotch, but right when he opened the door promising a "Cuban" just for him, Gloria came in wearing a sexy maid's outfit and said "hola." Then, when he thought the Scotch had arrived, a group of dancing Scottish strippers entered. This fed in with a bunch of other jokes throughout the episode, and I was cracking up.

"Rebarka" the dog wasn't the best joke or anything, but when Higgins the butler saw the statue and thought that it was Phil's "wife?" Oh man, that was too much.

Then how about Claire using Gloria as her lucky charm? The strange different bath settings? Jay counting the floors of the hotel and bemoaning the fact that he's not on the top? Cam and Mitch finding a naked man in their romantic bath? All of this was gold.

Actually, I think I'm going to have to give this episode a perfect score.
