Grey's Anatomy: Through the Fire (22x17)

Oh my god if Kwan is leaving the show... I don't know how I'm going to cope with that.

Cons:

As is typical with this show I do have a long list of complaints. I believe next week's episode is the finale of this season so it'll be interesting to see which of these plot threads is something that will carry over, what ends up resolved next week, etc. etc... I'm going to try and rapid-fire this because there's a lot to cover.

Simone and Lucas sleeping together is a big no from me, obviously, I'm so tired of these two. I also feel like it's weird that there was no actual apology from Lucas for blaming Simone for Katie's death, they just kinda... ignored that elephant in the room? Ugh.

Winston and Jules... look, I really tried this week to step back and put my resentment aside and see if I thought this was cute and I just don't think they have the chemistry to compel me. Jules is such a fun character and she feels wasted on this boring romance. Am I supposed to think her belief in crystals and Winston's fear of wool is charming? I am not charmed.

Jo having doubts about her career path. Am I in a time loop? Please. Jo. Just stick with something, I can't watch you waver around anymore on this.

Owen is a petty little man child. The way he stormed off from the conversation with Teddy is an encapsulation of everything I dislike about his character. I also thought, even for cheesy soap opera, that the ending where Owen is leaving a message to Teddy about the traffic on the bridge was pretty ridiculous and hokey. I don't want Owen to die, not because I like him, but because it's more tedious to go through a grief plot line than one where Owen just moves away. I hope they all go to Paris together and never return, honestly.

Pros:

I am provisionally putting the Kwan and Bailey and Richard thing in the "pros" column, but I really will be devastated and upset if Kwan is being written off the show. What I like about this is that Richard is behaving with proportional outrage over what has happened. There should be real consequences. We all know it! I hope we get something juicy here, I hope we have an opportunity to see Kwan's friends stand by his side and support him. In the real world he really should be super duper fired but in TV show land I want this guy around for a long time, so...

I liked Meredith and Bailey at the student research fair or whatever it was called. There's something quite lovely and tender about a relationship like theirs where they were once in a mentor/mentee relationship and now are unequivocally peers. I loved Meredith coaching Bailey to be encouraging to the students with their bright-eyed views of the future, reminding her that she had always encouraged Meredith when she was young.

I like the Amelia and Toni stuff, I hope it actually goes somewhere interesting from here. Amelia deserves a bit of happiness, she really does remain one of the best characters this show has left. I also liked Toni finally seeing Ben's worth. I enjoyed the subversion of expectations, where we saw that Ben's personal attachment to firefighter lady actually made him a better surgeon in that moment and he did great things, instead of overstepping because of emotional compromise or whatever. I never watched the firefighter spin-off but I do know this woman is Carina's wife... I was disappointed that they found a way to bring her into the episode but not have Carina show up, that felt like a waste!

Next week we will see the fates of Owen and of Nick, two of the world's most annoying fictional men. I am rooting for them both to survive, if I'm honest, just because Meredith really does not deserve to have anybody else die on her. I am hopeful that with Owen and Teddy out of the way, maybe next season of this show will be less irritating to me? Of course, Link will still be there... and Lucas... and Richard will probably contemplate retirement for the millionth time... honestly, can we just get all the guys to leave, except Kwan? Kwan can stay.

6/10
