The Vampire Diaries: The Devil Inside (5x12)

Does anyone else feel like this show is running in circles? Damon's bad... again? Really? Truly? Do you think I want to watch this crap anymore? Sighhhh. Let's take a look.

So, Katherine is in Elena's body, but Nadia is worried about Elena popping back to consciousness at any given time, so she contacts her Traveler friend to do a spell that will permanently tie Katherine to Elena's body. In order to do this spell, the Traveler needs Katherine's corpse. Damon, however, has disposed of the corpse and he's not telling anyone where it is - he just says that Katherine is back where she was always supposed to be.

Aaron shows up to the girls' dorm room trying to find Elena, but instead just finds Caroline, who is cleaning the apartment to work through her stress and guilt about Klaus. Aaron tells Caroline that he has inherited his family's money and cut Wes off from funding Augustine, so it looks like that problem is done with. However, Aaron's problems have just begun, as he runs into Enzo. Damon finds Enzo in his house (doesn't Jeremy have to invite him in?) with a body bag. Inside that bag is Aaron, still alive. Enzo tells Damon to kill Aaron, or Enzo will do it himself. Instead, Damon compels Aaron to get out of town and never look back.

Meanwhile, Tyler is back in town and in a decidedly bad mood, so Matt decides to throw him a welcome home party. At said party, Katherine (impersonating Elena) talks with Caroline about Klaus. Katherine makes sure that Tyler overhears them talking about it, which is just all sorts of cruel. Tyler is understandably angry, but he goes a bit far when he wolfs out to frighten Caroline. Stefan shows up, and Tyler tells him what happened. Caroline flees, ashamed, and then Stefan punches Tyler in the face. Woo!

Meanwhile, Katherine and Nadia go to the tombs (where Katherine's body is) to do the Traveler spell. While there, Elena wakes up. She impersonates Katherine, and then attacks the Traveler and Nadia, running away as fast as she can. However, the Traveler and Nadia are able to finish the spell, even without Elena's body present. Elena flees to Tyler's house and into Damon's arms.

Damon, who has spent this episode moping around and trying to reach Elena, is relieved to see her. But just before Elena can tell him what's going on, Katherine takes over her body. The spell is complete, and Elena is no more. Katherine, posing as Elena, breaks up with Damon for good, stating that she doesn't want to be the only thing Damon lives for.

Stefan and Caroline have a little friendship moment where Stefan tells Caroline she's a horrible person for sleeping with Klaus (because it was what Caroline needed to hear). After all, Stefan slept with Katherine. Tyler grouses that his life is a mess, but at least he lives in a mansion! And, we end our episode with Damon and Enzo. They employ the old "lay down in the middle of the road" trap for the fleeing Aaron, who steps right into it. Damon says that he's a monster, just like Elena thinks he is, and then he drains Aaron.

The above is not the most coherent plot summary, and that actually may be because this episode didn't have the most coherent plot. A lot of things were going on - Caroline was feeling guilty because of Klaus, Tyler was pouting away, Damon was angsting without Elena, Katherine was up to shenanigans, Stefan was being a saint... Nadia was being as uninteresting as she always is... and as our episode ends, we have Damon reverting again to his "evil" state, which is just beyond stale. Also, does anyone believe Elena is really gone forever? Don't be silly. So... as you can tell, I wasn't the hugest fan of this episode. But, to be fair, there were things I liked about it. Let us list them, so I can end on a positive note:

- Stefan slapping Tyler! That was awesome. And Stefan's conversation with Caroline at the end was great.

- Nina Dobrev's acting. I probably sound like a broken record, but damn, this girl is talented.

- Stefan's behavior. Not only was he an awesome friend to Caroline, but he actually does want his brother's happiness. It's weird, but he really is sincere when he says he wants Damon and Elena to get back together.

- "Elena's" speech to Damon at the end. I know it was Katherine talking and not Elena, but did anyone else think she brought up some very, very good points?

- Enzo! I mean, I hate that he seems to only be in the show so that Damon can angst out and be a villain again, but I do love the guy who plays Enzo. Very attractive. There could be interesting possibilities for this character ahead. Who knows?

There you have it! While I felt like the episode had a lot of missteps, I still enjoyed parts of it. However, it's not one I'll be re-watching any time soon.

6.5/10
