The Big Bang Theory: The Cohabitation Experimentation (10x04)

A solid, unoffensive half hour of comedy. That's about all I can hope for with this show, and this week I got it.

Cons:

Bernadette and Howard's tiny little C-plot was a regular cul-de-sac. It started nowhere and went nowhere and ended nowhere. Basically, they go for an ultrasound, and they decide they don't want to know the sex of the baby. But Raj finds out, so then the couple decides that maybe they do want to know. Howard calls Raj over and over again in the middle of the night, about to ask him to tell them the sex, but then Bernadette changes her mind at the last second and says she doesn't want to know. And that was it. No resolution. Pointless plot. No good jokes.

Pros:

The main plot was much more successful, however. Due to a plumbing problem, Amy has to vacate her apartment for five weeks. After discussing it with Leonard, Penny, and Sheldon, a new arrangement emerges. Leonard and Penny will stay in Sheldon's apartment, while Amy and Sheldon will stay at Penny's place. These five weeks will serve as an experiment in cohabitation. Sheldon wanted to be in an unfamiliar place so that he could maximize his understanding of his comfort levels. Penny and Leonard are thrilled to have the apartment to themselves, and spend their time dancing around in their underwear. Amy, meanwhile, has a hard time due to Sheldon's annoying sleeping habits. They get into quite the fight about it the next day, but eventually decide to continue with the experiment.

See, this is a rather simple scenario. Nothing too flashy or fancy. And yet, it moves the characters forward and provides for a few laughs. I love that Penny and Leonard have such a joyful, silly relationship. We seem to be past the stage where we can realistically get away with any Penny/Leonard intrigue or drama. They're married and they're happy, and sometimes it's just fun to see that.

Amy and Sheldon, on the other hand, are taking a big step. While there was a lot of comedy associated with Sheldon talking and flailing around in his sleep, I appreciated the more serious side of this plot thread as well. Amy and Sheldon have a frank discussion about what they're comfortable with. Amy knows that sex is something Sheldon isn't necessarily comfortable with, and so she takes it off the table, saying that they can just try sleeping in the same bed and see how things go. I really enjoy the fact that we've got what essentially amounts to an asexual Sheldon Cooper who is in a relationship with a girl who is not Ace. This is a fairly common setup for a couple. Sex isn't always a prominent part of a relationship, and surprisingly this show has done an okay job of treating that with respect.

Comedy highlight of the episode: Sheldon and Amy's fight is riddled with insults about each other's professional accomplishments. Penny and Leonard commentate:

P: Was that a science diss?
L: Yeah.
P; Was it a good one?
L: Eh...

That had me laughing so hard!

That's all I've got for this one. Some solid humor and some respectful treatment of a serious relationship issue. Good on ya, BBT. Keep it up.

8/10
