Parks and Recreation: Mrs. Ludgate-Dwyer Goes to Washington (7x08)

Aww! April is all grown up. Let's take a look at this episode. This might be my favorite of the season so far. It all clicked together very nicely, and it had a lot of funny jokes!

April and Leslie are all set to go to Washington DC to talk to some senators about a Parks Department budget proposal. Ben suggests that April tell Leslie that she wants to leave her job, but April doesn't want to because she knows Leslie will freak out. In DC, Leslie and April have successful talks with several important politicians. Leslie gets offered a promotion that would mean moving her to DC. She wants to accept, and she's excited about the next step in her life. She also talks to April about her five-year government plan. April, finally fed up, tells Leslie that she doesn't want to work in government anymore. Leslie is upset, and runs off to have lunch with Madeleine Albright to console herself.

Later, Leslie and April talk again. Leslie apologizes for getting mad - she wants all of her friends to be happy together, but more importantly she just wants them to be happy. April tells Leslie that it's all thanks to her that she has ambition and dreams in the first place. Leslie takes April to a consulting company that helps place people in jobs. After April talks to a woman about her goals, she realizes that she wants to work there - at the company. It hits all of her requirements. Creative problem-solving, telling people what to do, etc. Leslie is so proud of April for following her dreams.

Back in Pawnee, Andy has decided to use April's absence to track down the perfect job for her. He gets Ben involved. First, they go to see if Ron's company has anything that April would want, but that turns out to be a dead end. Ron does agree to help them in the search, though, because he says getting a good person out of government is a noble goal.

They find what seems like the perfect job as a consultant for the accounting firm that always wants Ben to work for them. However, it looks like they aren't taking new applicants for the position. Ben calls in Donna, Craig, and even Gary (formerly Jerry, Larry, and Terry). They all put together a presentation to make April seem perfect for the job. Andy almost blows it by throwing fireworks around the boss's car to get him excited about April for the job, but Ben and the others talk him down and convince him to see April for an interview. Unfortunately, at this point Ben gets the call that April has another job in mind.

Hmm... I can't think of one thing to complain about, really. Maybe the cameos were a bit over the top. But I still enjoyed them. I want more from the triplets, but this episode was really about April. I don't know... this was kind of the perfect episode.

My favorite thing about this episode is obviously April, and the journey she's been on to find what she wants to do with her life. I loved the moment when she told Leslie that she loved her and how much Leslie's help had meant to her over the years. Also, that job is so perfect for April! It seems like at least two of our favorite couples will be relocating to DC as the season concludes. I like that. It seems fitting.

Leslie's lunch with Madeleine Albright made me smile. Of course Leslie would bully her into being her friend. Sounds about right. The other cameos were pretty funny too, especially the bit about the Polynesian Folk Band called "Across the Isle."

Back in Pawnee, I think it's really sweet how much Andy, Ben, and Ron care about April and want to make her happy. I love the ongoing joke about Ben's popularity at the accounting firm. Ben's stupid puns always make me chuckle. They also repeated the joke about the company getting their hopes up, then being let down when Ben rejects them. This time, April's the one doing the rejecting. Too funny.

I want to list some of my favorite jokes in this episode. There were a lot of them.

Ron has brothers! That's hilarious. Ron's line about creativity: "it's for people with glasses who like to lie." Leslie wants to borrow a hat from a stranger and throw it up in the air victoriously when she finds out she got promoted. Madeleine Albright says she hasn't seen Leslie this upset since she almost forgot Ann's half-birthday. April's heartfelt speech to Leslie ends with "I love you, which is why I have decided not to turn you into an actual sea urchin." Oh, April. Ben calls in Gary to help get April the job, at the intense dismay of Ron and Andy, but Ben reminds them that they need someone to do all the copying and busywork. Leslie keeps a binder maker on retainer in Washington DC.

I could go on. This episode just hit all its marks in terms of humor and emotion. On to the next one!

9.5/10
