The Mentalist: Black Market (7x04)

Another adorable adventure with Jane and Lisbon, but yet another episode with no kiss! Let's dive right in. Again, I apologize for my lateness and for my brevity...

In this episode, Lisbon and Cho pose as a couple to uncover an illegal diamond operation. The team must go to a diamond showcase to find the people responsible for the sale of illegal, unregistered diamonds. One of the sellers winds up dead, and the mystery deepens. Jane, however, is getting sick, so he can't really take charge of things himself. He has an idea to talk to everybody and play the psychic game to reveal the killer. He has Lisbon act it out for him, while Jane talks to her through the phone. Lisbon is able to uncover the truth: a young woman who had partnered up with the victim was to blame for his death.

Meanwhile, Vega keeps trying to get back in good with Cho, but Cho is cold to her. Abbott asks Cho to bring Vega along while they are working the case, and Cho reluctantly does so. Eventually, Cho makes Vega an offer of continued partnership, and Vega gladly accepts.

In another subplot, Abbott's wife is up for a big promotion, but Abbott has a secret from his past that might prevent her from getting the job. One of Mrs. Abbott's future coworkers suggests that she and her husband create the illusion of separation in order to distance her from the potential scandal. Abbott wants to go through with it so as not to hurt his wife's future.

Wow, that's a brief plot summary. I don't mean to leave out details, but that's just how it worked out. Let's start with my only real complaint.

Cho and Vega. I'm glad that Cho seemed to forgive Vega in this episode, but I don't understand his anger in the first place. It was over the top and rather silly. Cho doesn't seem like the kind of person who would get so bent out of shape about Vega's tiny little lie. I mean, I get it. Loyalty is important. But even Abbott tells Cho to cut Vega some slack. So why does he dig his heels in so much?

Other than that, I don't have anything to complain about.

Even though the Cho and Vega plot line made me angry, I still like watching these two onscreen together. I don't think they're hinting at a romance (at least I hope not) and I like this really refreshing student/teacher dynamic between them. I can't wait to see where it goes from here. Hopefully we don't have any more mishaps standing in the way of a good working relationship.

Sick Jane is the cutest thing! I loved the way he kept pushing forward, refusing to admit his own annoying bodily weakness. His eventual succumbing to his illness didn't stop him from solving the case, though. Jane is just such an endearing character. I love that.

Lisbon was also adorable in this episode. I loved her bravery here, as she stood up to do something she was clearly uncomfortable with. And she knocked it out of the park! Sort of. She'll never be the master charlatan that Jane is, but she did her best! There were a lot of comedic moments here, actually, as Lisbon declares that all animals can talk in the afterlife, and Jane tells her to get back on track. I loved this entire scene, as it showcased the great teamwork between Jane and Lisbon, and also the ways in which they influence each other - Jane can help Lisbon to calm down and find fun in their work, while Lisbon helps Jane understand the importance of honesty among the lies.

This episode also introduced a new and very interesting plot point - Jane wonders if he and Lisbon should run off together and leave the FBI behind. Lisbon says that being a detective is who she is, and Jane capitulates almost immediately - he was just thinking out loud. This seems to be the planted seed for future conflict in their relationship. I can see this going in a lot of different directions, but ultimately I think I like this idea. Jane and Lisbon are both passionate and complicated people - just because they have fallen in love and are now together doesn't mean that it's going to be smooth sailing from here on out. I'm excited to see what happens from here.

Then there's the subplot with Abbott. Very interesting! This is the first we've heard from him about his personal life, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. He and his wife seem to have such a strong, loving relationship. The thing that's drawing them apart is baggage in Abbott's past, not anything petty or superficial. In a way, they are what Jane and Lisbon might become with time. A solid, loving couple that might be in trouble due to professional conflicts, rather than personal ones. I'm curious about what Abbott got up to in the past, and what this will mean for his future with the team.

Okay, I think that's where I'll leave it. I really, really want some Jane/Lisbon kisses please and thank you! I'm tired of waiting!

8/10
