Once Upon a Time: A Tale of Two Sisters (4x01)

Sassy Regina is my favorite. I love her so much. But before I talk more about that, let's talk about this episode, shall we? Overall, I'm happy with it.

Elsa and Anna's parents are about to drown in a shipwreck. Before they die, they put a message in a bottle and cast it out to sea, hoping that their daughters will find it and learn the truth. We then see Elsa and Anna's past in Arendelle, as Anna gets ready for her marriage to Kristoff. Elsa brings Anna up to the attic, to give her their mother's wedding dress. However, when they're up there, Elsa finds her mother's diary, and finds out that her parents left Arendelle because of Elsa. However, Anna is convinced that this is not the whole story. She decides to go to where her parents were going, to learn more about what happened to them. Elsa doesn't want her to go, but Kristoff helps Anna get away without Elsa knowing it. As Anna heads out, we learn that her destination is the Forbidden Forest, where her parents were heading when they died.

In Storybrooke, Elsa is set loose, trying to figure out where she is. After she uses her ice powers on Grumpy and Sleepy's car, the two Dwarves come to tell the others that someone with strong magic is in Storybrooke. As Emma and Hook try to figure out what's going on, Elsa creates a giant ice monster. It seems to get even angrier when people attempt to attack it.

Meanwhile, Robin comes by to officially break things off with Regina. He says their love was real, but he has to keep his marriage vows to Marian. Regina gets Sidney Glass out of his prison in the basement of the hospital (where she used to keep Belle) and asks him for his help in getting rid of Marian. However, when Regina sees Marian about to die at the hands of the ice monster, she defeats the monster with her magic (Emma's wasn't powerful enough). After saving Marian, she goes back to Sidney, realizing that Marian isn't the problem - the problem is the book of fairy tales. It still sees her as a villain, and so she'll never be able to get a happy ending. She wants to find the writer of the book and get the happy ending she deserves.

Emma has been avoiding having serious conversations with Hook while all of this is going on. She says she still feels guilty about messing up Regina's relationship with Robin. Emma gives Hook a kiss and tells him to be patient.

While all of this has been happening, Belle and Rumple are off on their honeymoon in a castle that got brought over in the Second Curse. They re-enact the scene from Beauty and the Beast and twirl around on the dance floor. Rumple also finds the strength - after talking to his son at Bae's grave - to give Belle the real dagger. He uses magic to freeze Belle so that she won't know that a switch was ever necessary. In the castle, Rumple finds a mysterious object that seems to have powerful magic.

As the episode ends, Elsa finds Gold's shop and sees a necklace that she had given to Anna. She renews her resolve to find Anna.

So, I know I said I was happy overall with this episode, but I do have one serious concern... Anna and Elsa. They're just... Anna and Elsa from Frozen. Exactly. Everything is exactly like Frozen. Hell, even Sven is there. This annoys me on so many levels. Think about this show's creative interpretation of Snow White, or of the Mad Hatter. But for Elsa and Anna, they're just writing bland fanfiction about what happens after the end of the movie. Seriously, that's pretty much all it is. I expected something creative and new, so this was a bit of a let-down, if I'm being honest.

Also, I'm still not letting Rumple off the hook for deceiving Belle. Sure, it's great that he gave her the real dagger, but he still lied about it. Hopefully this will all get cleared up for real at some point.

On the good side of things, I did love Rumple's heartfelt talk at the graveyard. So touching. The story about the happiest moment in Rumple's life was so sweet, and quite the tearjerker. I like that Bae is still going to be a presence in the story, even though he's gone. I also loved Belle and Rumple's first dance together. It was a nice nod to the Disney movie without being over the top.

Hook and Emma of course were fantastic. I like that they sort of have an an understanding. They know they like each other... they just don't know what that means for the immediate future. Nice kiss, nice conversations... so precious.

Even though I wasn't thrilled with the Elsa and Anna plot, given how heavily it depended on the movie, I still liked the actresses. Especially Anna. She's really cute, and she's doing a great job. I just hope that we'll see these Arendelle characters interact with our veteran characters soon, or else it will be hard to connect with them.

The best thing in this episode was, by a long shot, Regina. She went through quite a lot of emotions here. She was angry at Emma, heartbroken because of Robin. She hated Marian, and then grudgingly had to accept that she did nothing wrong. She had to come to terms with her fate, and then decide to fight for her happy ending. I predicted that Regina wouldn't turn totally evil again, and I appear to be right. She's learning to figure out the real cause of her distress, instead of taking it out on innocent parties, like Marian or Snow. And I for one am super curious about who wrote the book!

Regina and Sidney had the best exchanges in this episode. Here are a few of my favorite moments: First, when Sidney realizes that Regina doesn't remember Marian, Regina responds "Well she's awfully vanilla, can you blame me?" Later, when Regina asks Sidney to do her a huge favor, Sidney says that he can't manage it, but that "I can probably tell you if you're wearing too much eye makeup." So sassy. So awesome.

As we move forward, I'm really looking forward to exploring Regina's arc even more. Especially since Emma is determined not to give up on getting her a happy ending. How is that going to happen? Are we going to get a repeat of what happened with Mary Margaret and David? Maybe Regina and Robin just won't be able to keep away from each other. Who knows?

So, there you have it. I'm skeptical on the Frozen stuff, but I should wait and see what else they have in store. Other than that, this was a solid episode!

7.5/10
