Grey's Anatomy: When I Crash (22x06)

LET RICHARD RETIRE. Jesus Christ.

Cons:

A thing I don't like is how our broken up couples are in this stage of like... oh, we're not so angry anymore, we're starting to be wistful/fond about things. I was happy that Teddy said she and Owen were making the right decision breaking up, but I still don't trust that we won't have to get back on this merry-go-round. And with Lucas and Simone, I'm almost positive they're building to them being back together eventually. They're making Lucas nicer than usual and less annoying but it's not working on me because I feel like I know his true colors, and his true colors are whiny baby. ALSO in the romance department, Jules asked Winston out for a drink and to that I say boooooo. Stoppppp.

Richard being all snappy at Bailey was annoying, although the story-line itself was annoying, with Bailey giving up too soon and then Richard being right that they could get the guy's heart started again. And then we get the revelation at the end of the episode that Richard has been diagnosed with cancer. Let this old sick man quit his job! Like! I'm sorry, I don't want to force the actor to leave the show or anything but at this point it's ridiculous. How many times has he had a health scare, and then gotten back and kept going at work? It's not even that I don't like Richard as a character, honestly, but he's overstayed his welcome at this point!

I should have expected them to cliffhanger us with Jo and the birth of the twins... we're going to get a really dramatic premiere episode when the show is back in January, it's going to be all angsty and we'll have to watch Link have big feelings, and then... I'm fairly sure Jo will be okay, ultimately. I know this is the type of show this is and I shouldn't be annoyed with the soap-opera-esque feel of it all, it's just hard to feel hyped about this angsty story-line when I don't like Link and I don't believe in their love.

Pros:

All that said about the Jo stuff, I did like the way Winston and Ben each functioned in that story-line, trying to be there for their friends and professional at the same time. Shit is tense at the end of the episode with Winston about to perform the C-section himself, due to running out of time to wait for someone else to come in. I do always like it when these disaster-prone surgeons are forced to do surgery on their colleagues, it does make for some juicy drama.

It feels weird to put this in the "pros" column because I dislike the story-line so much, but I was happy that Nora broke it off with Owen and I'm happy that Teddy held her ground that their separation is the right move. As insufferable as it all is, just like on a purely human level these relationships are toxic and bad. Owen and Teddy make each other miserable. Owen is not in a healthy enough place to have a real and good relationship with Nora. Just be single for half a second, dude. You're about to be thrice divorced.

I really liked the stuff going on with the newer interns this episode. I thought Wes, the guy that Simone hooked up with, really shone this week, and I was compelled at last to actually go and look up his name. So what does that tell ya. He is able to connect with a mostly non-verbal autistic man who has a minor head injury, and help get him calm and into the hospital. They bond over basketball and video games and it's really sweet. I want Simone and him to stay away from each other romantically probably, but in terms of the character on his own terms, I was quite endeared to him this week. I was also happy for the sake of the patient, Aaron, that his aide Glen survived the crash too!

Kwan is angling for a surgery with Mohanty, and she sets him a difficult procedure on a recalcitrant patient in order to earn the honor. In the end, it's Lucas and the new intern Dani who manage to do the procedure and get to scrub in. I liked the moment Lucas checked in with Dani and said that him being dismissive and short with her wasn't personal, it's just the chaos of the job... but that also that isn't an excuse. ALSO, Kwan isn't too bitter about missing out on the surgery, and he and Mohanty end up making out in the elevator in classic Grey's style... hell yes. Honestly I'm just so into Kwan as a character that at this point he's allowed to do whatever he wants forever? I know maybe I'm a hypocrite for being into this and not into the Jules and Winston thing but I think the Kwan and Mohanty thing is meant to be more... like... a just sex thing and maybe feelings happen later. With all the angsty and tender relationship drama in the show these days, some casual hooking up feels like it would hit the spot.

On a smaller note, Helm is back! She didn't have a ton to do but I loved seeing her face. Let's give this woman like a proper story-line that has some juicy development in it. I'd love to see her elevated more in the story.

I feel like there are a lot of details I'm missing in this one but that's all I feel motivated to talk about! We've got to wait until January to find out the fate of Jo and those babies, I guess. I know I sound chill about it but I will legit be so pissed if Jo dies lol.

7/10
