Schitt's Creek: Start Spreading The News (6x13)

I am made of emotions! Holy shit, I can't believe next week is the end. Let's dive in to what I consider to be pretty much a perfect penultimate episode.

Cons:

While I ultimately come down very favorably on Patrick and David's story this week, I will admit that I'm not a fan of the trope of people making huge extravagant purchases as a romantic gesture. It happens in The Office, it happens (sort of) in Gilmore Girls, and it's always bothered me. David could have found another nice gesture, and then just explained that he wanted to stay and buy the house.

Pros:

I'm nitpicking, though. I love that David was so focused on being full-steam ahead about New York that he briefly lost sight of his partners' needs, but that once he realized he had been negligent on that account, he immediately took steps to remedy it. David and Patrick are at the point in their relationship where conflict between them isn't going to blow up their whole lives. They are settled, they are secure. But that doesn't mean things are always going to be simple and perfect. Patrick was willing to move to New York to be with David, but for him it was a sacrifice. And then David realizes that he can make that compromise for Patrick, and stick around in town.

I also loved David's journey this week, of realizing why he wanted to go to New York so badly. It was about proving a point, that he wasn't a loser like all of his old friends probably thought. That, coupled with the fact that he really has made a life for himself in town, convinces him to stay. He's got his business, he's got Patrick, and he's got Stevie.

I love that Stevie is staying in Schitt's Creek but traveling all around setting up the new motels. That feels like an appropriate endgame for her. I might have wished for a bit more Stevie content this season, but ultimately I'm happy with where we landed.

And then there's Alexis. I am so emotional thinking about how much she has grown. While at first she had decided to move to New York, live with David and Patrick, and be close to her parents, as the episode continues it becomes clear that she'll be the only one moving to the Big Apple after all. Moira and Johnny are heading to California, David is staying, and Alexis is off to spread her wings. This is the perfect encapsulation of her journey! She was always independent, always going off and doing wild things on her own, so she needed to learn to put down roots and find a community. Having done that, it's time for her to let her business take wing! I miss Ted, but I hope they don't pull an eleventh hour thing and have him come back to be with her. She'll find love someday, and for now she's putting herself first!

Twyla being a secret millionaire is so perfect I feel like I somehow always knew it. Turns out, she works at the cafe because she likes it, not because she needs the money. She cleaned up in a lottery several years back, and has been keeping it a secret ever since. Alexis tells her that while money can't buy happiness, it can still be fun to treat yourself sometimes. And so, Twyla buys the cafe!

Twyla and Alexis' friendship is really sweet, and this final reveal of Twyla's secret wealth was oddly the perfect capstone to their story. Rags to riches, and riches to rags, bonded by an unconventional friendship. I hope Twyla does visit Alexis in New York and the two continue to be close for the rest of their lives!

While Johnny gets ready to build a new successful business, Moira gets the news that they want her for Sunrise Bay after all! Ultimately I think I'm pretty happy with this ending for her character as well. Moira is a performer. She has learned a lesson about not deriving all of her validation from her career, as is exemplified when she tells Jocelyn and the other women from the choir that they bolster her and make her feel strong. I also like that Johnny is rearranging his plans to accommodate Moira's career, and not the other way around. They really are such a strong couple.

This show is about a town that brought a family together, and now at the end, they are going their separate ways. But it feels appropriate, it feels earned, and it feels like this family will be close for the rest of their lives. I'm ready to cry like a baby for that finale!

9.5/10
