The Mentalist: Brown Shag Carpet/White Orchids (7x12/13)

I am so happy. I am so happy. And sad. It's over! It's really over! You know, The Mentalist was one of the first shows I ever got seriously invested in. It's been a big part of my life for years now. It was definitely time to say goodbye, but that doesn't make it any easier.

The serial killer is still out there. Jane goes on various news shows to promote the idea that he's a psychic helping the FBI, because they know the killer is interested in psychics. Jane gets kidnapped by the murderer, and is forced to pretend to be a real psychic in order to stay alive. When the guy leaves the room, Jane breaks out of his cuffs and sets up an elaborate system in order to trick the murderer and blow the house up. He does so, destroying the decimated corpse of the murderer's father, which had been in the house all along. Lisbon shows up in time to see the house explode, and she frantically goes inside looking for Jane. Jane is okay, but a little shaken up.

Jane tells Lisbon that he's going to renovate a little cabin and get it ready for the two of them to live in. He says he's not sure about continuing to work for the FBI, but he promises he's not going to run again. Lisbon asks him if he's ready to take off his wedding ring, but it looks like maybe not yet. Eventually, though, Jane does take off the ring. He says he wants it to be something he shares with Lisbon moving forward. He wants it to be a symbol of their future together. He proposes, and Lisbon accepts.

At first, Jane and Lisbon plan on quietly sneaking away and getting married with just the justice of the peace. But, when Lisbon is pressured into inviting her brothers, the floodgates open and more and more people start getting invited. Abbott offers his family home for the wedding, and things spiral out of control from there.

Cho and Abbott discover that the murderer, going by the name "Lazarus," did not die in the explosion. At first they decide to hide it from Jane and Lisbon, and just put some bodyguards at the wedding to keep things safe. Eventually, though, they do tell Jane. Jane tells Lisbon. The two of them sneak off to elope quietly, away from all the chaos, which leads Lazarus right to them. Looks like it was a setup, though! Lazarus is safely taken in to custody, and Jane and Lisbon are happily married.

In the final scene, Lisbon tells Jane that she's pregnant, and the two of them embrace, overjoyed.

Soooo cuuuuuttteeee.

My only actual complaint is just that this whole last season has been a bit awkward and unbalanced. This finale was an amazing capstone to this last season, but it wasn't really a capstone to the whole show, if that makes sense. It feels like The Mentalist ended when Red John was killed, and everything since has been like a weird spin-off. Still worth it, because I love Jane and Lisbon so much, but weird and not quite right.

But that's not really a complaint about this episode specifically. If I were to have a few qualms, though... the actual catching of Lazarus was anti-climactic. Why bother bringing him back for one last scare if there wasn't ever any real danger? It felt unnecessary, and like it was just a way to avoid the last episode being nothing but a cute wedding. I wouldn't have complained!

Also, the random CBI guy who came back and worked the case? Who was he again? Maybe I should be remembering him from an earlier season, but I don't. And he was completely unnecessary, was he not? Why bring back someone from the past for this final episode, if it's not even somebody important?

But enough of that. This was just too cute. After everything that's happened, I couldn't imagine a better way for this show to bow out.

First of all, Kimball Cho. He is going to make such a great boss. I'm so proud of him! The scene with Wylie was just the cutest thing. When he hit Wylie upside the head, I was shocked for a moment, but then I realized that he knew just what he was doing. Also, the wedding dress scene? His advice to Lisbon was so hilarious, but then he capped it all off with a really sweet moment wherein he told Lisbon that her mother would be proud of her. Cho also acted like he knew all along that Jane and Lisbon were going to get married, but I'm not sure if that's true. He could have just been saving face. I also love the way he goes to Abbott for advice about dealing with Lazarus - not about the official parts of the job, but about whether or not they should tell Jane and Lisbon.

Wylie is so cute. I feel like he's my child, or something, and I'm a proud mother watching him grow into his own. It's understandably difficult for him to be around Vega's desk, remembering all he could have had, but he's going to meet the challenge head-on. Good for him! Also, he looked adorable dancing at the wedding.

Abbott is sort of in between jobs right now, as he's passed the torch to Cho, but hasn't moved yet to be with his wife. I love the way he just walks aimlessly around the office looking for things to do. We got a lovely moment of reminiscence between Abbott and Jane, where they talked about the deal they made together on a napkin. It's so funny to think back to what everybody thought of Abbott at first. Now, I love him to pieces! He was so enthusiastic about the wedding, too. How funny is it that he offers his house for the ceremony, and then throws together this whole crazy party? He's the ultimate Jisbon shipper!

There's also the theme of psychics that's been carried through this show from the beginning. Last week, I complained that the whole "are psychics real" thing was too played out, but I did appreciate what happened this week. Jane had to come full circle. He had to pretend to be a psychic to get out of a terribly dangerous situation, and he therefore had to call up a part of his past that he really didn't want to think about. It was a nice way to bring things back around.

Rigsby and Van Pelt! They were only there for a second, but it was lovely to see them again. At one point during the wedding, Cho actually takes a group selfie of himself and his two friends. That just melts the heart, doesn't it?

And then of course you have the cheesy, wonderful relationship between Jane and Lisbon. They hit every note they could think of for this final episode, giving us the sappy declarations, the cliche announcement of pregnancy, the frantic worry over each others' safety... on and on. It was just so perfect. Here are some of my favorite moments:

Jane and Lisbon are on the phone and Lisbon notices that the trailer's door is open. She says she's going in, and Jane, scared, says "Okay, fine, but you're not hanging up!"

Jane calls Lisbon "Teresa" multiple times in this episode.

Jane gives Lisbon a GIANT ring. Jeez, that thing is impressive.

The best scene, though, was when they're sitting at the table in the middle of the setup for the wedding, and Lisbon is crying about how the whole thing spiraled out of control. She tells Jane, desultorily, that "it's a Silvan theme." That whole scene was just so cute and domestic and I love the multiple quick kisses and the "you go girl" and the decision to elope. It was all perfect.

When they catch Lazarus, Lisbon emerges in her wedding dress pointing a gun at him. Jane takes the gun from Lisbon's hands once the threat is gone, and replaces it with a bouquet. Perfect.

Their kiss when they got married was pretty beautiful. I'm not sure what it is with these two actors and their chemistry, but I've never thought their kisses were all that good... but this one certainly was.

Finally, there's the final scene. It was just so perfect, I don't even know what to say. You see the noise and the chaos and the party across the water, and then there's Jane and Lisbon, in their own little bubble of happiness. The look on Jane's face when he realizes that Lisbon is pregnant... it's beyond words. I really feel like I can imagine the rest of their lives together. The love and the pain and the heart-bursting happiness that they're going to experience. I'm just so, so happy for them. I feel like I know them.

Ultimately, that's the gift this show has given me. Have there been better finales out there? Yeah. The Parenthood finale comes to mind. But even if this finale didn't have that summing-up feeling, where all seven seasons of the show were captured in a perfect moment, I did feel like I got that feeling when it came to Jane, our protagonist, the mentalist himself. He found his happy ending. He found a way to incorporate the pain of his past into his future, and he's going to be okay, now. I can just feel it.

Oh boy. I'm getting all weepy. I think I'll leave off here. This final episode gets...

9/10

The show overall definitely dropped off in the last two seasons, as the reboot to the FBI left a lot to be desired. However, I cannot forget the wonderful gift of the previous seasons, and I'll forever love this show for taking serious risks and creating such complex and lovable characters. The show overall gets

8/10
