The Mentalist: Il Tavolo Bianco (6x20)

My feeeeelllllliiiiinnnnggggsssss. Whyyyyy.

Cho, Wylie, and Abbott continue on with the human trafficking case we started last time. Several of the women are still missing. Eventually, Cho discovers the horrible truth: some of these women are being tagged as involuntary organ donors. They find several bodies, including the missing sister of one of the rescued girls. This girl is missing her heart.

Meanwhile, a new case arises. Jane is indicted for the murder of Red John, and Lisbon and Fischer are forced to go in and answer questions. After they are put through this ordeal, Jane and Abbott tell them that it's all a setup. They want Jane to be put in front of the jury so he can figure out which one of them was bribed to let a gangster off the hook for murder. Jane quickly discovers that it's the prosecuting attorney who was bribed. In order to prove it, Jane must allow himself to get on the radar of the gangster, so that the guy will put a hit out on him, and they can prove his guilt for the earlier murder. Jane seduces the gangster's girl, and indeed does get a hit put out on him. They are able to get the bad guy in the end, and also arrest the corrupt attorney.

Lisbon is struggling to choose whether or not she should move to DC. Pike tells her to take her time in deciding. Jane says that he hopes she stays, but later on he comes to her door and tells her, tears in his eyes, voice choked, that he wants her to be happy, and that that's the most important thing. Lisbon tearfully watches him go.

So, the bad stuff?

I got a bit confused about the gangster plot at certain points... it seemed a bit silly, or even unnecessary in this episode. We could have focused all of our attention on the trafficking and on Lisbon's decision, but instead we threw in this whole other plot too. It allowed for some good moments here and there, which I'll get to in a second, but I didn't understand the larger reasoning behind it.

Other than that, though, there were so many excellent things about this episode.

I love that we're continuing on with the trafficking case. Here we have an example of a case that's not tied up in the personal lives of any of the main characters, but that is turning in to a mini-arc in the season all the same. It's interesting, and not something that you see on procedural cop shows very often. In particular, I love Cho's involvement in this case, and how he feels a real connection to one of the girls, whose sister has been missing.

The "indicted for murder" fake-out was great. I know I complain sometimes about this show's inability to let us in on the secret, but this was the perfect fake out. At the start of the episode, I thought I understood what this episode was going to be about, and then they turned the tables on us. I was right there with Lisbon when she was angrily telling Jane that she should have been told what was going on.

The gangster's fiancée was a great character. She came across as this stereotypical bimbo, but when Jane started treating her with actual respect, she started noticing the lack of respect she received from her soon-to-be husband. Also, she had one of the funniest bits in the episode, albeit funny in an off-putting way - when they catch the gangster, he starts choking, and she starts freaking out and begging someone to help. Jane saves the guy and then saves "all better, now off to jail." The woman just seems quietly bemused by the events going on around her. I laughed pretty hard at that.
Abbott is such a Jane/Lisbon shipper. Like wow this wasn't even subtle. He has the FBI pay for a romantic expensive dinner for the two of them, and then he tells Jane to get a move on and stop deluding himself. I can't believe I used to hate this guy. Now he's one of the best things about the show.

And of course I should talk about the Jane/Lisbon material in here. First you've got Jane saying that Lisbon should stay because she'd be bored if she left. I like how Jane tells Lisbon he doesn't want her to leave, but immediately is sure to put some distance between them by remarking that it's because Lisbon won't like DC, not because Jane personally wants her around. Then later, at the French restaurant, Jane asks Lisbon "What does a girl want to hear?" and Lisbon replies "I wish I knew." And then that scene at the end. They were both crying. Both of them. Crying. Because they love each other so much but Jane isn't going to say it and Lisbon isn't going to say it and Lisbon might actually leave and oh noooo my feeliiiiiinnngggsss.

I'll stop there. If you couldn't tell, I really enjoyed this episode.

9/10
