Schitt's Creek: Happy Ending (6x14)

Y'all when I tell you I cried... gosh. This was just so perfect and lovely, and it's exactly what I want to be feeling after watching a finale of a show like this. Gorgeous.

Cons:

I honestly... don't really have any? I guess maybe it felt like Roland and Jocelyn and Twyla got slightly short-changed by this finale, but that's a nitpick. The focus was where it was supposed to be.

Pros:

Where to even begin?? I love a show that can be cheesy without feeling over-wrought or unrealistic, and this finale hit that spot for me. You have all of the "I love you" moments between all of the family members. It might seem like a simple thing, but hearing Alexis tell her mother that she loves her, hearing Johnny and Moira say that to their kids, hearing Stevie say it as Johnny and Moira drive off... it's just so perfect and meaningful and sweet.

And Patrick and David's wedding... god, it means so much to have something like this, to have the finale of the whole show be centered around this wedding between these two men, to see the whole town rallying around them and supporting them. Sometimes I get annoyed that every sitcom wedding has to have some catastrophe, and when I heard that the venue was ruined because of the weather, I was prepared to roll my eyes. But this show is so absolutely amazing at taking a concept you'd think would be played out, and then adding to it, or contextualizing it, or just imbuing the characters within it with so much pathos and humanity, that I don't mind a cliche or two.

Schitt's Creek: Start Spreading The News (6x13)

I am made of emotions! Holy shit, I can't believe next week is the end. Let's dive in to what I consider to be pretty much a perfect penultimate episode.

Cons:

While I ultimately come down very favorably on Patrick and David's story this week, I will admit that I'm not a fan of the trope of people making huge extravagant purchases as a romantic gesture. It happens in The Office, it happens (sort of) in Gilmore Girls, and it's always bothered me. David could have found another nice gesture, and then just explained that he wanted to stay and buy the house.

Pros:

I'm nitpicking, though. I love that David was so focused on being full-steam ahead about New York that he briefly lost sight of his partners' needs, but that once he realized he had been negligent on that account, he immediately took steps to remedy it. David and Patrick are at the point in their relationship where conflict between them isn't going to blow up their whole lives. They are settled, they are secure. But that doesn't mean things are always going to be simple and perfect. Patrick was willing to move to New York to be with David, but for him it was a sacrifice. And then David realizes that he can make that compromise for Patrick, and stick around in town.

Schitt's Creek: The Pitch (6x12)

This was an excellent episode, and it gave me all sorts of feels!!

Cons:

I could have predicted that the pitch wasn't going to go perfectly, but I wish they hadn't gone with the somewhat cheap laugh of having Roland be the one to fall apart. He's got a dry mouth, and knocks over water during the presentation, and meanwhile Stevie is flustered while doing her part of the presentation, especially when the computer freezes. I actually think the message would have hit home harder if they had done a solid, smooth presentation and were still laughed out of the room because the investors are just snobs. The somewhat slap-stick-ish mishaps happening earlier on before they got their feet under them just didn't really do anything for me.

Pros:

But mostly, I loved everything about this episode. Stevie, Johnny, and Roland are off to New York for their big meeting, but there are bad signs from the start when it turns out that Johnny's main contact, and the reason they got the meeting in the first place, isn't even going to be there. It's obvious that Johnny is considered kind of a joke, and it doesn't help that he has two very nervous small-town partners who clearly have never worked in this environment before. What I love is that underneath the nerves and awkwardness, the idea is a good one, and they have put in their research. Johnny ends up giving a really strong pitch, and if it weren't for the fact that the people in the room were prejudiced against him before he even walked in, he would have had a good chance of success.

Schitt's Creek: Escape Room (6x11)

This was really cute and I loved every minute!

Cons:

So now they're setting up the idea of Alexis needing to leave the nest and move away from the town, which I like and makes perfect sense... but it just reminds me again of Stevie's weird trajectory as a character this season. She was worried she hadn't seen enough of the world, so she tried to spread her wings. But then she immediately flew back to doing the same thing she started with, only now making it bigger. That's fine, but it doesn't match naturally with what she said she wanted. I keep wishing we could have seen her do a bit more exploring before she came back to the motel business.

Pros:

Johnny spends the episode waiting on a phone call from his old assistant, who is now a big-time investor. There's shenanigans, of course, where Roland mishears the name and doesn't deliver a message, and Johnny has to leave his phone outside of the Escape Room so he misses a call. But in true Schitt's Creek fashion, the scenario doesn't blow itself out of all proportion. Instead, we get good news - the investor is interested, and Johnny has a meeting set up with him! I love this success story, especially as it somewhat eclipses Patrick and David's bachelor party.

Schitt's Creek: Sunrise, Sunset (6x10)

Where's my boy Patrick?

Cons:

Seriously, though, any episode without Patrick in it is missing something in my humble opinion!

And even David had less to do than one might hope for him. Basically, he's picking out food for his wedding, and he wants all of the most elaborate, expensive options. Johnny has agreed to pay, but he finds out some bad news about the new motel he's just purchased, and that makes him hesitant to put down the money.

There's nothing wrong with the subplot here, and I actually really liked the resolution of it, but it didn't spark anything in particular for me. It was there, it happened, the end.

Schitt's Creek: Rebound (6x09)

This was a classic episode in every way... I loved it from start to finish.

Cons:

I'm struggling to think of anything to really complain about... I guess if I had to nitpick, I'd say I miss Stevie having more to do. Her arc this season kind of got dropped. I wanted more out of her desire to spread her wings and fly.

Pros:

The main plot focuses on Alexis after her breakup with Ted. She seems chipper, but the family gets concerned (especially Johnny) when they see that she's dating a much, much older man. This leads to Alexis getting dumped by her new man, after Johnny has a talk with him, and eventually Alexis allows her father to comfort her.

I really liked the random old man Alexis was dating. He was acting like he was unaware that he was the same age, or older, than Alexis' father. It was funny how much of a non-issue it seemed to be for him. Also, the show could have gone the direction of having this character be a total loser or something, but he actually just seemed like a perfectly normal dude with a successful career and a family. Sure, it's weird that he's dating someone so much younger than him... but Alexis is in her thirties. It's not actually predatory. And there wasn't any dumb plot thread about he and Johnny getting into a fight. Honestly, Johnny just told him the situation and the guy bowed out. It's another example of this show going with a more restrained, realistic scenario!

Schitt's Creek: The Presidential Suite (6x08)

Aww, that made my heart hurt a little bit!

Cons:

Moira is always hilarious, but I'll say that my least favorite story of the evening goes to Moira and Johnny, all the same. Basically it's some drama about upgrading their room at the motel. Roland and Jocelyn are also looking to get away from the chaos at home, since they are renting out an extra room and have a new baby as well. It was all... fine, but not the kind of thing I think I'll be remembering long-term.

The same can be said for Patrick and David's plot thread, although of course I could never get sick of watching the two of them. It's just... a person getting a spray-tan that goes wrong is kind of a played-out sitcom trope. I feel like I've seen it on several different comedies and it never offers more than just a single paltry visual gag. They didn't take it too far, since this show is quite restrained in most respects, but the whole concept had me shrugging my shoulders more than anything else.

Pros:

But even when a plot thread on Schitt's Creek is somewhat mediocre, there are always moments of brilliance.

Schitt's Creek: Moira Rosé (6x07)

What a delightful episode!

Cons:

I don't really have any complaints to speak of! I only ever wish we got more of some things. More explorations of Alexis's decision not to join Ted, more checking in on Stevie's journey of self-discovery. But that's just hoping for things this episode isn't even about. Let's talk about all the greatness!

Pros:

Starting with the subplot, just for fun... Alexis takes Twyla, Stevie, Jocelyn, and Ronnie to a fitness class that she has been representing and promoting. It becomes clear pretty quickly that it's a cult, to Alexis's horror. The other women are all pulled in to varying degrees (Stevie is a skeptic from minute one, Ronnie seems all-in until told what's up, and Twyla knew it was a cult all along and was just trying to be supportive). I keep going back to the fact that Schitt's Creek doesn't go the obvious route with any of its comedy bits. Instead of Alexis being charmingly naive for the whole story, she is smart enough to realize what's going on as soon as she's given hard evidence of it, and then she endeavors to put a stop to her friends' enrollment right away. There are no hijinks where someone gets immediately brainwashed, no lying in order to get away with her mistake. It's "realistic" within the framework of the absurd setup, and that makes it more down to earth while still being no less funny.

Schitt's Creek: The Wingman (6x06)

This episode was a lot of fun, and very silly. There was also a more emotionally resonant aspect with Alexis's story-line, which I greatly enjoyed!

Cons:

I guess I thought Patrick and David's story-line was going to... go somewhere? Not necessarily like I thought they'd actually have a threesome, but I was thinking maybe the experience would prompt them to have a conversation about their relationship and their future. But no, it just sort of... ended with them awkwardly leaving and there was no payoff there.

I liked Johnny teaming up with Roland and Ronnie to try and cheer Bob up, but I can't help but notice that Johnny is the least involved in the rest of the family's story-lines. He's often off in his own little universe, and I'd like to see him interact more with his wife and kids in the near future!

Pros:

But like I said, Johnny's plot thread was a lot of fun. Bob is not doing well after Gwen left him, so he relies on his friends Johnny, Roland, and Ronnie to get him out of his slump. Predictably it doesn't go well, but Ronnie does end up finding a hot date! I just love any story that shows how much Johnny has truly grown into a part of this community. Not only is he in partnership with Roland, not only does he care about the town in a general sense... he's also willing to go the extra mile to cheer up Bob, which I think is really sweet!

Schitt's Creek: Crows Premiere (6x05)

You know what's weird? I can't figure out if this episode is called "Crows Premiere" or "The Premiere"! It seems to be listed differently on different sites. Oh well, I'll leave it as is for now. Let's dive in!

Cons:

So... Stevie is back with the motel business? I can't tell if this is 'endgame' status for Stevie, or if there's more to come. I really liked the idea of her exploring what else is out there. She gets a job at a sketchy airline, and then... that's it? She's back to what she was doing before? I think I just need more data before I can understand their reasoning here.

Pros:

Despite what I said above, I do like Stevie and Johnny's relationship, and it was cute that Johnny was being so supportive of her dreams... and that he was also genuinely happy to have her back in the fold. They are very sweet.

Schitt's Creek: Maid of Honour (6x04)

Patrick looked so very handsome in his suit!

Cons:

I thought Johnny and Roland's plot thread was mostly forgettable. It was like they were just trying to fill some time. We've seen that the new property has been purchased, so it's time to keep expanding... but then instead there's a guy living in one of the rooms who may be a squatter, so they have to worry about him. The whole thing culminated in an awkward standoff where the guy offered reasonable explanations for why he had a gun and a bag full of money, and Johnny and Roland looked ridiculous. There was nothing bad or wrong with this story, but it didn't really move me in any way, either.

I wish this episode had more Patrick. That's going to be a consistent thing for me... I just really love Patrick a lot, you guys.

Pros:

Moira's plot thread was centered around the new trailer for her Crows movie. She shows it to everyone, and is less than thrilled with Jocelyn's tepid response. Jocelyn is basically conned into writing effusive praise for the trailer, in order to make Moira feel better.

Schitt's Creek: The Job Interview (6x03)

Well this was quite cute, although I missed Patrick!

Cons:

Alexis getting a pet turtle was just a touch too cutesy for my taste. If they were going to go there and actually have her get a pet, I wish there could have been more done with it. As it is, the turtle was a clumsy metaphor for putting effort into her relationship with Ted, and it didn't seem to really go much of anywhere.

Moira talked about her desire to get out of Schitt's Creek in this episode, which surprised me somewhat. Not that she would still be wanting to leave, I guess, but just that the show hasn't commented on that in such a long time, and it felt like some artificial urgency was inserted into Moira's motivations here, just because this is the last season. Johnny seems to be pretty happy putting down more roots in the area. Is the endgame really going to be Moira and Johnny leaving? Because if so, that feels thematically a little bit challenging, given that this was their goal on day one, and they've changed so much.

Schitt's Creek: The Incident (6x02)

Just as adorable as ever, of course!

Cons:

I tend to be really uncomfortable and grossed out by bathroom-related humor, so when I realized that the premise of this episode was going to be that David wet the bed, I was... less than thrilled. And even though there wasn't a lot of lingering on it, and David and Patrick were cute as always, I will admit that I'd rather just... not? Have a story like this? I'm not prudish, it's just the one thing that I always think is uncomfortable to address, even - or maybe especially - in a comedic setting.

Pros:

But that said - Patrick is such a sweet and understanding man. I love how David is just blatantly like: "I'd totally leave you if our positions were reversed" even though we both know that's a lie! And Patrick knows how to be comforting and understanding, but also can't help but make fun of David just a little bit: "this is an expensive mattress!" They really do get each other on a deeper level. And the end, where Patrick puts on his mouth guard and nose breathing thing, just to put David at ease... aren't they just the sweetest.

Meanwhile, Moira takes to social media to promote her movie, and accidentally live-streams a conversation about David's little accident. One of the things I love most about this show is its comedic restraint. You would think that the reveal that David's embarrassment was broadcast to the internet would have far-reaching consequences, and we'd have all sorts of overblown reactions, and people pointing and laughing at David in the streets... but no. It's relatively subdued, but in a good way. Most of the comedy comes from Alexis thinking the whole thing is funny, and being reluctant to delete the video, and Patrick being adamant that David can never ever ever find out. And... he doesn't. The episode ends with Patrick taking David's phone out of his hands so they can go to sleep, crinkly plastic mattress protector and all. I love it.

Schitt's Creek: Smoke Signals (6x01)

I managed to catch up with this show just in time to join in for the final season while it's airing! What a delightful discovery Schitt's Creek has been for me.

Cons:

The only real complaint about this episode was that I missed seeing Jocelyn and Twyla and some of the other townsfolk, but I'm sure we'll get to check in with them in no time at all!

And if I had a nitpick, I thought the whole thing with Alexis reading the date on her plane ticket wrong was a tad too unrealistic. Sure, I can see her making that mistake... but are you telling me she never sent her flight confirmation email to Ted? Are you telling me he never checked in for the arrival time, in making his plans to pick her up when her plane landed? I guess it just seems silly that Alexis' mistake wouldn't be discovered until literally just before she's about to go to the airport.

Pros:

Let's start with Moira and Johnny. Moira is still in distress because of her film being cancelled, and after getting trapped in the closet during a minor fire at the motel, she comes to a realization about her relationship to acting. She decides to call it quits, and celebrates by going out for a picnic with Johnny. But when she calls her agent to formally quit, she learns that her movie has been picked up by a streaming service, and gets back into the game!
